Mrs. island is seriously considering throwing her Oyster card in the bin after recent events. Having got a maximum cash fare last month through her own fault, she added two more £6.50 fares yesterday, which I think is due to OSI combining journeys which it ought not to have done.

She started at Kidbrooke, touching in at 1550, going to Cannon Street NR where she touched out at 1615. She then went on to Liverpool Street on the Circle Line, touching in at 1625 and out at 1639, and left the station to come and meet me after work.

We were going to Lee Valley to see a preview screening of Morning Glory, so we returned to Liverpool Street NR and touched in at 1717, touching out at Edmonton Green at 1801.

On the way back the touch-in at Edmonton Green triggered an auto topup, which we weren't expecting, so we checked the journey history at London Bridge and it reported two incompete journeys, one from Kidbrooke and one from Edmonton Green, along with Kidbrooke-Cannon Street and Kidbrooke-Liverpool Street charged at zero.

My guess is that the journeys to Liverpool Street LU and on from Liverpool Street NR were combined as an OSI, and the time from Kidbrooke to Edmonton Green was then found to be 11 minutes over the maximum journey time for six zones (321234), resulting in an incomplete journey from Kidbrooke, and when she thought she was touching out at EDR in fact she was considered to be starting a new journey, which was also incomplete.

Had the journeys been priced separately they would have come out at £2.10 for the KDB-CST-LST segment (zone 3-1 NR off-peak through fare with 16-25 Railcard) and £3.30 for the LST-EDR segment (zone 1-4 NR only peak), which would be chopped to £4.80 by the price cap.

As her other journeys that day reached the price cap in any case, do you think the Oyster helpline will refund the £13 maximum cash fares? And while we're on the subject, is the "Help and Contact" section of the TfL website coming up for anyone else, because it won't load at all for me?

Yes. This used to happen to me all the time with the OSI at Canary Wharf. Email or call Oyster and ask for a refund. I've also had no trouble in securing additional compensation when speaking to them on the phone. I've had at least 5 refunds from them.

The OSI limit Liv St LU - Liv St NR is 40 mins so you were caught by that. Max journey time for 6 zones 120 mins so yes it seems to be OSI issue.

Can't email them because clicking the "Help" or "Contact" links on the website just times out. Hopefully the number on her card (which is four years old) hasn't changed!

The helpline is 0845 330 9876. The help and contact link seems to be working for me though. Personally I'd call though because my experiences with email are not good.

These long OSIs at London terminals really do cause problems. They need them because people do wait on the concourse until their train is advertised, but it does increase the likelihood that two completely seperate journeys will get rolled into one. And to cap it all, the OSI at Victoria isn't even enough if you've just missed a train to Epsom Downs as they are only once an hour.

Ideally it'd check whether it's in your interest to apply the OSIs and only do it if it was...

Was planning to. Should we wait until the journeys show up on the Oyster website before calling? As in will they be able to see the journey history?

They should be able to see them the next day (ie now). They say wait 24 hours, but you should be ok to call this evening (up to 8pm).

The problem is with the crude principle that a journey from A - B is charged as a journey from A - B, regardless of the route taken. An OSI has no impact on the interpretation of the route the holder has taken. Therefore the price and the time limits won't change either. This can work in the holder's favour or in some cases, cause two uncompleted journeys. I learnt this the hard way by making a capricious journey, unintentionally invoking numerous OSIs. Eventually the time limit between my origin station and a particular point I validated had been exceeded so it deducted the Entry Charge, but could not deduct an Exit Charge due to insufficient funds (I had enough for a Travelcard cap but not two "maximum charges"). Thus I got trapped behind the barriers, the RPIs circled and Penalty Fared me. That took two months and a lot of work before it was cancelled, though in the OP's case a call to the Helpline should suffice.

Happy ending for this one, after 10 minutes on the phone the Oyster call centre eventually agreed that there was an overcharge, refunded back enough to the card to bring it down to the daily cap, and threw in an extra £10.90 for our trouble, without being asked :)
