Nothing has advanced to the formal funded feasability stage though often mooted has been extending the electrification of the Kirkby line to terminate at a new terminus in north Skem and even the idea of creating a a further connection of this to Ormskirk for a large looping Merseyrail service.

Thanks for this information. If any new spur off the existing Orrell line were to happen, what infrasturctural problems might be enviaged with the crossing of the M58 motorway. I should imagine the bridgeworks cost alone would be considerable.

Two 156's on the 17:10-Kirkby tonight Only 3 Carriages fitted in the new Platform after the work.... Wooops!!

Northern Rail, making good use of resources there

Kirkby should be 2x142 maximum.

Surely the 17.10 from Manchester to Kirby on the last proper Saturday before Christmas would be rammed as far as Wigan. I would say a very good use of resources.

Personally two 156's are overkill especially with the stop start nature of the Atherton line but 142/150 combinations are quite common think two are booked a day with one booked a double 142.

A Better Atherton line idea would be to make the Kirkbys Semi fast and make one of the other athertons Slower as the Kirkbys get rammed with alot of short hop travelllers and end to end this isnt a great thing... especially when using 156's with there poor door positioning.
