ORR data Performance, reliability, cancellations by Operator Jan-March 2025

ORR has published quarterly report covering Jan-March 2025

Lots of data split by operator :

numbers of trains planned,
percentages on time (Avanti was pathetic 39%), nationally only 68%
percentages cancelled (about 1 in 30 trains) although Northern was nearer 1 in 12 cancelled including P-coded,
Elizabeth line cancelled 5% too

Lots of data to digest and comment on.

Much of the data is also on tables on ORR website, so although they compare to last year, it is possible to compare to earlier periods (eg 2019, pre Covid), although I haven't yet attempted this as it is time consuming and really needs to be done on desktop screen for easy read of spreadsheets

Broadly the figures haven't changed much and I noted that on time is generally going to be replaced by "time to 3".

Elizabeth line will always be high on the cancellations because trains are often outright cancelled instead of running 20 late as a metro operation. During the period in question, there was also a driver RDW/overtime ban which led to more cancellations and P-coding.

With respect though, other companies have RD "bans", or do not engage in RDW, neither should large scale RDW be used to sticking plaster over poor resource management. If train crew are permanently unfit for work then replacements should be recruited and trained.
