Patients who have agreed to donate organs could be given priority if they ever need a transplant, under proposals being considered by the NHS.

I don't suppose this will ever happen but it's a good idea.

NHS Blood and Transplant should also take a donor card as absolute authority and stop involving relatives reversing the dead persons wishes.

Unless there is a valid reason nobody should expect to be a priority for a transplant if they refuse to carry a card.

I can't see it happening either. It's a decent idea but I'd rather see a national system being opt-out as per the system Wales has just voted on. Ultimately I'd rather not see this as I think the current triage system works well enough and there should be enough resources in the NHS to not turn anyone away.

A donor card should definitely be absolute authority though

I don't suppose it will ever happen, sounds too much like emotional blackmail.

I understand your point about the donor card but it would seem somewhat insensitive to ignore relatives wishes, I really think things are fine as they are.

On a simlar vein (no pun intended) there is a shortage of blood doners at the moment (especially o neg which I have) so if anybody is interested in doing something amazing:D

Yes I'd like the Welsh system to be bought in but doubt it ever will be.

The woman representing the NHS just said on SKY news that "we have plenty of blood there is no shortage"

I'm O Rh- too, but I'm banned from donating blood because of stupid discriminatory laws.

So you'd take relatives' wishes over the deceased's wishes (if they have a card they clearly want their organs to be donated)?

Some of these relatives turn up out of the blue and may have had no contact for years with the deceased and then decide to overturn the decision.

It's not as if the NHS has to consult them as they don't.

Is that a new kind of kebab I don't know about <D:lol:

For my part I donate platelets instead of whole blood. I'm A+ although as long as they accept it I'll donate

Discriminatory laws?

It's always a difficult one regarding relatives but I would think most would give their blessing if that is what the deceased person had wanted

:o surprised that law still exists. That's outrageous.

(EDIT: that's supposed to be a shocked face, not a weird grin, these emoticons aren't amazing...)

It's not a law, it's a risk assessment...

There is always a potential shortage of blood and blood products as the entire stock will have expired in a few weeks time unless replenished.
