An elderly relative, who is a nervous traveller, is booked today (20 Dec) on the 1516 from Oxford to Bournemouth. This is now terminating at Winchester. Clearly she can, in principle, continue on any reasonable train from Winchester to Bournemouth. And, I guess, will probably get a seat. However, this prospect frightens her.
Does she have other options, e.g. somehow getting Cross Country to offer her a seat on the 1416 or 1616?

If she has an Advance ticket which states CrossCountry trains only, her only right is to travel on the previous two or next two CrossCountry services between Oxford and Bournemouth. She cannot use SWR without ticket acceptance being arranged, which it hasn't as far as I can see.

If she's on a flexible ticket, then she can use any suitable trains which meet the route and time restrictions on the ticket.

If she also needs a seat reservation on the earlier or later services, you can make one for free online through GWR's website. Sign up for an account, then go to the account area, then "my bookings" and an option will appear at the top of the page to make a reservation.

From CrossCountry JourneyCheck:
12:25 Manchester Piccadilly to Bournemouth due 17:21 will be terminated at Winchester.
It will no longer call at Southampton Airport Parkwy, Southampton Central and Bournemouth.
This is due to a shortage of train drivers.

Further Information
Passengers with advance or 'XC only' tickets may travel using the two CrossCountry services operating before and after this service at no additional cost without changing your original ticket. Passengers with flexible tickets may also have other journey options using other operators services, check at: http://ojp.nationalrail.co.uk/
Unfortunately, any seat reservations will not be carried over, but Coach B, H and L are our unreserved coaches on CrossCountry services (where available) so please head to them. You can view the formation of our trains via www.realtimetrains.co.uk

The previous/next two services rule is in line with new industry rules for cancellations: https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/changes-to-industry-arrangements-for-cancelled-trains.272698/
