I'm aware Merseyrail have 0 trains that are air conditioned, while all TPE units are air conditioned. Northern and FGW have a small proportion of air conditioned units but how do other operators fair?

Roughly half of FGW's stock is air-conditioned (if you include 166s), but this represents a much higher proportion of journeys considering the capacity of an HST vs a sprinter.

London Overground is all-AC. London Midland is nearly all AC except for a small number of remaining sprinters.

All Gatwick Express services are AC too... <trollface.gif>

I thought the 323s were non aircon...

FCC have only got 377s with air conditioning.

The 313s, 317s, 319s, 321s and 365s are all without aircon, making it a significant percentage.

That'll change when the 319s get replaced by Desiro City trains. Also is the £31 million overhaul of the 365s that's recently been awarded to Railcare going to include air conditioning?

I hope the 365s will get aircon. If they do, then when the new Desiros arrive (which will replace more than just the 319s, as I expect the 317s and 321s will go too) it will leave jut the 313s.. and even they could potentially get aircon if they got a proper refurbishment.

I do hope that by then TfL will have sought to take over the Moorgate line and decide to get new stock, perhaps as a run-on order to a replacement of the 315s on the West Anglia side.

I'm speculating all of this, but using some element of common sense.

Update: I am not sure about the 365s now.. it's not mentioned in the press release and would be a pretty major thing to miss out.

Eversholt Rail Group release said:
First Capital Connect’s fleet of Class 365 trains is to be transformed with fresh interiors and enhanced accessibility features as part of a £31m investment which will also include heavy maintenance to ensure their continued reliability.

The trains carry many of the 86,000 passengers travelling daily with First Capital Connect (FCC) on the Great Northern route between London Kings Cross and Peterborough, Cambridge and King’s Lynn. Eversholt Rail Group leases the trains to FCC and is funding the work, which will be carried out by Railcare at its Wolverton plant. The refresh will coincide with the scheduled major overhaul of the trains which will ensure their continued reliability.

The first new–look train is expected to enter service at the end of 2013.

The new–look trains will deliver significant improvements to the passenger environment with renewed finishes throughout. Further details are to be released later.

From early 2014, to improve accessibility and bring the trains in line with the latest disability regulations the following changes will be additionally made (and later retrofitted to those trains already refreshed):

A new wheelchair-accessible toilet in each 4-carriage unit (to the latest specification and easier to use than that already in place)
Two spaces for wheelchairs instead of one, with companion seating
A new fully automated passenger information system with audio announcements as well as visual.

The full programme will take three and a half years.

David Statham, Managing Director, First Capital Connect, said: “Everything our passengers tell us shows that a clean and comfortable travelling environment is one of their key concerns. This major investment in one of our biggest fleets of trains will give us just that – a brighter, new–look train cabin with better information and better facilities for people with disabilities.”

Mary Kenny , Chief Executive Officer, Eversholt Rail (UK) Ltd said: “We are delighted to be funding this investment in the Class 365 fleet and helping to improve the journey experience for FCC’s passengers. We believe refurbishment is an efficient way of bringing benefits to both the train operators and users.”

Jamie Borgeat, Commercial Director for Railcare, said: “This project is a fantastic example of joined–up thinking; taking the opportunity to invest in additional refresh work and ensure the trains meet the latest PRM standards whilst they are undergoing a scheduled C6 overhaul makes great sense and reduces downtime. We are committed to ensuring that we deliver the trains back into reliable passenger service on time.”

It would be a shame not to add aircon, seeing that the related 165s have had aircon installed, and they operate much shorter routes.

Do 455s have air con? If so, surely all SWT stock (ignoring island line!) is air conditioned, unless I'm missing something else.

No air con.... Which is great fun when they are run as 4 coaches all weekend on routes served by 450's in the week :(

Eek :/

I would have thought at the weekends SWT would prioritise 450s over 455s (as FGW use Networker Turbos on Basingstoke to Reading rather than 150s at the weekend)... though I suppose there's not much they can do if drivers aren't available.

Just found that Southern fitted air con to theirs. Do they run further or something, or is there another reason Southern have done this and SWT haven't? Or is it just cab air con?

They do have fans at the end of each coach though to provide some forced ventilation. I recall reading somewhere that SWT decided installing air conditioning would be a false economy due to the frequent stopping pattern of services operated by 455s

I'd imagine with all their pacers and 150's, ATW have a fairly large number of non air conditioned units.

All 158s have air con.

However, most TOCs use the original air con system which was designed to run on CFCs (obviously illegal nowadays), and as such are not very effective and break down a lot. SWT and (some? All? I can't remember) EMT 158s, on the other hand, have had a new air con system fitted which is significantly more effective and quite a bit more reliable (but still not amazingly so - I read a statistic somewhere that I can't quite remember but it was saying something along the lines of that even the new air conditionings fail an order of magnitude more frequently than any other part of the train).

Including the loco-hauled sets for WAG I make it just under 60% of ATW being without air conditioning. Northern Rail in comparison have just over 80% that aren't air conditioned.

FGW actually have under 34% not air conditioned including the HST sets so have a higher proportion of air conditioned trains then I initially thought.

I wouldn't mind betting that GA's stock has a low-ish aircon proportion. Their 315s and 321s definitely don't and I rarely see one of the newer dark blue Clacton trains that does have aircon but it always seems to be set too hot.

Rather than peddling such nonsense (LO 378/LU S Stock manage OK) SWT should have just come clean and said it was too expensive at the time. When the refurb took place it was envisaged that the 455s would not last beyond 2020 due to disability regs, but many derogations since then (plus re-tractioning) mean they now will.

Usually on hot days. Travelled on 3 different Arriva 158s yesterday, and saw several others. All had the conductor-operated windows open.

All 59 merseyrail units have air con, it is just not for passengers ;) very recently, they were retrofitted with an air con unit for each cab. Those things would get very warm and unpleasant after a while on a hot day
