operative (off track)

Hi Guys,

I am new to the forum, i have an interview tomorrow for a (off track ) operative.

I'm looking for any tips or advise with the interview?

I've done my research on the company and the investment currently going on so feel quite confident regarding that aspect but i have read and heard it will consist of the 8 non technical skills.

Has anyone been for a interview recently and advise any tips or know specific questions they will ask?

The job description is

This is a hands-on role, working outdoors in all weathers. Carrying out general maintenance, your range of duties will include everything from shovelling ballast to carrying out lookout duties for your team. You'll check all kinds of things, to ensure they are in great working order - from vehicles and plant to equipment, tools and materials. In everything you do, you'll work safely and efficiently. If you've got what it takes, we'll provide all the training, protective clothing and support you need to succeed.

but the description is the same for the track maintenance, so done a bit of research and found that the role will be dealing with vegetation and fencing as well.

Any other help or advise would be appreciated.

Yes that is correct but also to my knowledge you will deal with the following too.

Fencing repairs etc
Gates repairs etc
Lifting up crossings for maintenance
The obvious one as you said vegetation.
You won’t have much to do with the ballast side of things as that is a different dept they call it off track but you work on track lol

It means the hiring manager is looking at your application before giving you a date for a panel interview

Just be sure to emphasise your commitment to safety. Of particular merit would be an example of a time when you've actively spoken out against something you think is unsafe or challenged an established way of thinking - it can be anything work or personal related, but it shows the sort of behaviours they're after.

They don't rush . Usually you get an email asking if you can attend an interview on a certain date .

My interview went amazing I came out thinking I couldn't of done any better so fingers crossed.

Also as Archie says emphasize your commitment to safety and have a few examples - study the life saving rules as well as this will be asked no doubt.

My interview was on the 28th August and no update yet.

Archie, can the decision take a long time?

Archie, can the decision take a long time?

Yes. Admittedly I work in a different area of the business, but HR's lethargy in making & communicating decisions is well known throughout the company. I've heard anecdotes of people being interviewed, not hearing anything for months, therefore assuming they've not got the job....only to then be phoned up and asked when they'd like to start (at which point they've usually found something else)! If you've got a contact name or email address for HR, don't be afraid to periodically ask how the application is going.

Don't let the above put you off - it's a great company that's unfortunately let down by its HR functions. I'd wager the manager that interviewed you is just as fustrated by the process!
