SWT have posted this: Overnight, a non-passenger (empty) service in Fratton depot was involved in an operating incident. This has blocked some of the lines into and out of the depot, which means that several train coaches have been trapped in the depot. Some services have been cancelled this morning and a few trains are formed of less coaches than normal.

Does anyone know what happened?

There are shunt movements all through the night at Fratton, 444037 became derailed heading into the depot and is still there now I believe, sidings 9-12 were blocked as a result which has left a couple of trains short formed this morning and the first first diesel service via Basingstoke had to be cancelled as a result. For more information you'll have to wait until the RAIB releases a report.

Unlikely to be a RAIB investigation for a depot incident normally though. There's probably quite a few each year when looked at across the whole country, and I don't recall many (if any) reports on them in the past.

Poo happens, when you consider how many trains go in & out of FR each day & night, they do well. Whilst they don't have the number of moves that Clapham Yd or Wimbledon Pk has they are busy overnight, so statistically they will get an "earth fault" once in a while.

Well an investigation was certainly underway when I saw the situation at 0900!

RAIB don't always conduct a full investigation for every incident they attend. I've certainly been at one incident where there was RAIB attendance but no subsequent report. In my example, their preliminary investigation identified that a SPAD was the cause where the correct follow-up procedure had not been followed, and they did not feel there were any further safety lessons to learn.

Sure, what I really mean is that attendance of the RAIB does not always lead to a report, or even one of their 'bulletins' if there is nothing of note happened, or it isn't worth informing the wider railway industry.

Not necessarily pertaining to this incident, as I've heard of it happening a few times - why does a train get derailed in a depot, presumably its travelling very slowly?

Usually involves point work. Points could have moved, or been moved, under the train. Trains can split points if the point blade isn't quite up against the rail etc. Points can be cliped for one direction and run through in another direction. could derail on trap points.

I don't know what happened in this incident though.

Speed has very little to do with it. It's typically something like points moving under the train (not the same level of track circuits and interlocking safety in depots), or trap points, or unintended movement, or SPAD, or points failure, or track failure, etc. That's just based on subjective observations of reading about incidents over the years, other opinions may vary.

I thought we had moved away from referring to "operating incidents" - there is a lot to be said for plain English. St Pancras security announcement today asked you to take care of your "personal effects" whatever they may be

Gotta like the stupidity of the comment from @ThatsMyTrain on that Twitter post

For the benefit of those that dont have Twitter -

@ThatsMyTrain
@SW_Trains So once again you failed to drive trains safely? Well done.

The same user also launched an attack on someone praising FGW for their First Class service this morning - saying that First Class was subsidised by "standing standard class passengers". Id ignore anything they say !!

This is why I have no interest whatsoever in Twitter - full of tw@ts who don't (or can't) engage brain before typing, like this moron.

Faecesbook is the same. I don't do either and after reading some of the inane wibble on them, I am most certainly glad I don't.

Having seen the incident site it is quite clear that the points switched direction before the rearmost bogie had passed over them, the inquiry will obviously focus on why this happened.
