Afternoon everyone,

Out of pure interest, I wondered if anybody knew how many people successfully pass the Train Driver OPC Assessments?

I believe I was told 22% a couple of years back, but that seems quite low.

Thanks in advance.

I think fewer pads than they do fail them, so I wouldn’t be surprised if that was accurate. I guess it depends how the information is collated as some (though not many) TOCs/FOCs still conduct their own psychometric assessments. Although a standard process and set of tests, I’m not sure if it’s the OPC that oversee all the tests and this has all the figures? Someone may be able to shed some more light on that.

I heard 20% recently. Probably due to newer enhanced requirements for a lot of TOCS

I was told by a driver manager and the opc that it's between around 40-50% to national standard. If it's to enhanced, it falls to around 20% and under. Contrary to popular belief , it isn't just extra assessments that make it enhanced. These extra assessments include the driver fault finding test , magnificent 7 sjt and visual search excercise. They also have different levels for the normal tests. Someone I know passed the group bourdon to national standard , but not enhanced.

Passing the psychometrics depends on what the pass mark is for each individual TOC/FOC.

I dont know the % but what I would state is that it is more than likely low, as the role of a driver is safety critial and therefore, only those that meet the highest standards should pass.

I wouldnt worry about what the pass rate is, but be more bothered about ensuring you know what you are doing at psychometric

I can confirm this too. When I say mine with Freightliner I had to do the VSE and DFFT as additional tests, but also had to redo the Group Bourdon as my previous pass was only to national standard. Not quite sure how my results increased but I pass to the enhanced standard.

I was also told at the opc that the only tests that have just a national standard , are the computer tests . I take that to possibly mean that all the others can be enhanced.

i failed my group bourdon test despite being 100% accurate and doing roughly 6-8 lines per page. i didn’t even get national standard so i’m wondering roughly how many lines per page would i have to do to pass.

people are telling me to go a bit faster and whilst doing that i can afford to miss/make mistakes and then i’ll pass. also they told me to aim for a minimum of 10 lines. could you guys tell me how you performed on the group bourdon test please

I got through roughly 2/3rds of each section before changing to the next one. I found that it was quicker for me to memorise the patterns that the 4 dots appear in, rather than counting each dot in each group. So i would look along each line for the squares, 'Y' shapes, diamonds etc that the 4 dots appear in. I'd say the Group Bourdon test is one of the easier psychometric tests to practice over and over to get better. Hope that helps, good luck for next time.

I counted one of my five pages and not the other four to not waste time. If I remember rightly , around 9-10.

I did 13 lines, dont believe I made any mistakes.
13 lines is excellent! I’ve never got anywhere near that, passed both times I’ve been but I was only being assessed to National, whether I’d done enough to also be enhanced I won’t know unless I get sifted through by an enhanced company. I was constantly around 10 lines with no omissions or errors.

It didn't feel excellent at the time, with there being still many lines I didn't get anywhere near!

I did however finish all 43 dials, which I was quite happy with

Is it insane? Really no idea tbh, I only know how hard it was for me, have no comparison. I knew I nailed the dials, but didn't think 13 lines was particular impressive, so thanks :)

Got my assessments next week and have been practising as much as I can. The information and advice on here has been great.

For the group bourdon, my results have been between 13-15 lines completed with no mistakes and 0-3 omissions. Had no problem with this practice tone test https://traineetraindriverinfo.com/low-tones-test-track-1/ and this dials test https://traineetraindriverinfo.com/dials-for-train-drivers/ but I’m not sure how similar they are to the actual assessments?

For the MMI, I’ve got examples for the 6 mandatory questions using the criteria on the rssb website. Hopefully I’ve done enough to pass on the day.

Will they be the same question’s though?
I wouldn’t put all my eggs in 1 basket if I were you.

edit: just re read your post and I’m not sure if you meant that you had prepared just the 6 questions as if you knew what they would be?

You sound like you are flying through those tests no bother. Good luck for the test day, where abouts are you heading for tests, Watford?

Not sure if the questions will be exactly the same but I’ve already passed the DMI so have a few examples prepared if similar questions come up. I’ve read on here that there are 6 mandatory questions for the MMI.

The wording of the questions aren't always the same but they are always looking for your experience of the same 6 types of situations: working in a team, leadership, your ability to learn, going above and beyond etc. It sounds like SeanW90 is quite well prepared. The only thing I might add with the MMI is bear in mind they may ask you for a different example if they don't think the one you give is strong enough for a question, so have a few backups in mind. They will also ask follow up questions when you give your example such as "how did that action make you feel", so don't let that surprise you. Good luck!

When I had my mmi my interviewer wasn’t happy with one of my examples and advised me to change it. He even helped me pick a better one so don’t let it fluster you if you do have to change.
One thing I picked up on while he was grilling me about my examples is they will basically ask the same question but in different ways over and over again, basically looking to see if you change your story I guess.

I had to change 3 of mine, was panicking so much, but still passed.

For those that have experience of the MMI, what are the six areas they questions focus on? For example working under pressure, working to procedures etc

Just type in ‘MMI’ in search bar at the top, it’s all there.. Makes loads of notes from what others have said and prepare your answers with real life experiences and you should be right.

The group bourdon is a strange phenomenon. I’ve seen qualified forces aircrew (who, have passed a difficult selection process previously) fail these tests.
and I’ve seen one candidate score quote by OPC, ‘one of the best performing candidates he’d ever seen’ proceed onto training but just couldn’t pass his rules course.

Easy for me to say but the best way to approach is not over think anything. Yes practice, but don’t get yourself into a tizz.

Had my psychometrics this week and passed all the tests. Just waiting on the result of the MMI. I’m actually more confident about how I did in the MMI than in the DMI which I’ve already passed. Answered everything in detail using STAR and made sure I related my answers to safety. But reading some other people’s experiences of failing the MMI when they thought they did well has got me worried. Fingers crossed I’ve done enough.

Congratulations on passing the paper and computer tests, i presume from what you said that you had to do them all in one day? I had to do it this way fairly recently and it was tough to prep for the full set in one go rather than just stage 1 then stage 2 etc. I was told that I passed my MMI as soon as I’d finished which was a huge relief.
