Is it possible to buy tickets to or from a zone boundary online? I've tried from all of the websites that I can think of and been unable to.

Not that I am aware of. Telesales might do it if you need it in advance, otherwise it'll be a trip to a booking office (Southern TVMs also sell BZ tickets).
Of course if trains stop at the "boundary" station then you can just buy a ticket from there.
