I see that ATOCs on line routing guide is now showing updated Sept 08.
Has anybody noticed any changes yet?

Carlisle-Newcastle still valid via Leeds despite Northern/ATOC saying it "would be changed" at the next revision!

The easement list has been extended. (That is the one listed under information - the one listed under instructions has not changed and is now out of date)

I also see that maps BB, MR, MS, NL, TS & XA have changed & that maps EG, PH & YL are new.
The new & amended maps do not show if you use the show maps command but do show if you go through information and select section D.

Can anyone tell me why the following new easement is needed as it seems to be the direct route?

030211 Customers travelling from Water Orton and Coleshill Parkway to
Hinckley and beyond may travel via Nuneaton. This easement applies
in both directions.

I must of missed something blatantly obviously in a previous thread but how does that work?

Carlisle to Newcastle maps GN, MM+TP, MM+WY+LY+NE, NC+MH+TP, NE+LY+WY+GM+NW.

Map GN gives via Hexham
Maps MM+TP give Carlisle to Leeds & Leeds to Newcastle.
or Carlisle to York & York to Newcastle with various routes from Carlisle to York includingCarlisle-Leeds-Wakefield (or Meadowhall)-Doncaster-(Selby)-York or from Leeds via Wakefield & Pontefract to York Or Leeds - Meadowhall via Huddersfield & Barnsley
Maps MM+WY+LY+NE allows Carlisle-Leeds-Selby-York & either the coast route via Sunderland or via Durham to Newcastle
Maps NC+MH+TP Gives Carlisle-Preston-Blackburn-Manchester-Huddersfield-Leeds-York-Newcastle
Maps NE+LY+WY+GM+NW gives Carlisle-Preston/Wigan-Manchester-Halifax/Huddersfield-Leeds-York(direct or via Pontefract or Selby or Harrogate)-Newcastle (direct or via Sunderland).

There are also other little diversions available on some maps but the above shows the main routes.

Yup; it is an absolutely fantastic ticket. Sadly, I can imagine that a lot of ticket inspectors would refuse it; or at least question it.

one did refuse to accept it, and issued a new ticket. Northern apologised and refunded the cost of the new ticket.

I know of someone else who successfully did the journey, but had to prove it was valid by bringing a copy of the RG with him.

I always carry the appropiate pages of the Routeing Guide if I am travelling on an odd route.

My favourite is a CDR from Nuneaton to Grantham via Peterborough Outwards & Nottingham return. For some reason passengers from Coventry or Leicester are not allowed via Peterborough and invariably the gripper does not realise that from Nuneaton it is.

There are lots of "odd" routes out there that invariably fox the ticket collectors. On first glance, Leuchars to Coatbridge wouldn't really be valid on an Edinburgh to Dunblane train, but whilst that usually raises a few eyebrows, it's always been accepted. A simple explanation of the journey (Leuchars-Edinburgh-Falkirk G-Cumbernauld-Coatbridge) and it's accepted. Then again, some of these combinations are a tad more questionable than this. In fact, CAR-NCL is such a long deviation that it almost seems insane to go via Leeds.

The routing guide has now been updated again, as of April 2009, and Newcastle-Carlisle has now been made sensible.

I wonder what other changes they have made? They should really tell us exactly what changes they have made. OK so NCL-CAR is fair enough stopping people going via Leeds but I do wonder if there are perfectly sensible routes that they have banished elsewhere?

Mainly the easements list I think - I noticed a few Southampton area ones put in there that weren't strictly valid before (brought up in a topic long long ago), and now matters have been clarified.

I see they have updated the easements::)

for example

010013 Routeing via Carlisle for Edinburgh (and north/west thereof) to Newcastle (and south thereof). This easment is to allow for engineering works at weekends up until and inclusive of 09/10/2005. This easment is in both directions

Possibly out of date??

000062 Tickets routed Retford for Lincoln-London or Saxilby-London are also valid on permitted routes that do not pass through Retford. This easement applies in both directions.(Not implemented or tested yet. To go live on 23rd May 2004)
??

Trains from or via Cardiff to Builth Road for the Royal Welsh Show (24th July - 28th July) do not pass Llanelli. Journeys to the show via Cardiff, Port Talbot, Pontarddulais which avoid Llanelli are permitted. This applies in both directions.
what year??

040000 Due to engineering works journeys may report repeated stations or doublebacks at BHM for the period 27/12/06 to 02/01/06 inclusive
??

also the unintelligble and pointless ones remain-

040003 AXS, AXR, SAS, SAR, LFR tickets routed AP HULL TRAINS ONLY are barred
From Where to Where ?

030248 Customers travelling between Coventry and Tamworth may travel via Nuneaton. This easement applies in both directions. (From Section C Coventry Tamworth TL WM)
What does map TL show?

030211 Customers travelling from Water Orton and Coleshill Parkway to Hinckley and beyond may travel via Nuneaton. This easement applies in both directions.
This appears to be the shortest route

Are these really true or do they need further clarification and what do they apply to?? Also 0320057 & 030058 appear to duplicate certain journeys

030097 This easement allows Scotrail Sleeper services to teminate at Watford Junction.
I thought easements were for tickets not trains!!

030083 Journeys to Bicester North may not go via Oxford and Bicester Town. Journeys to Bicester Town must go via Oxford. These easements apply in both directions.
030132 Journeys to Bicester North may not go via Oxford and Bicester Town. Journeys to Biceser Town must go via Oxford. These easements apply in both directions.

030071 Journeys from Chester-le-Street, Durham and Darlington to orthallerton and beyond may doubleback between Eaglescliffe and Stockton. This easement applies in both
directions.
Does this need two easements!!

030003 Customers travelling from Market Harborough to the north are valid to travel via Leicester. This easement applies in both directions.
How else do ypu go north from Market Harborough?

010008 During engineering works between Plymouth and Tiverton Parkway journeys may avoid Exeter. This applies in both directions.
How do you avoid Exeter?

There must be more that I haven't noticed.
Does anyone look at these before they are published??

Replacement buses sometimes avoid Exeter I think and run from Tiverton Parkway as it's near the motorway. Daft to have it as an easement though!

No-one of any intelligence ;)

They don't even check for typing errors. Don't know where Galsgow Central is myself (Easement 030217). I've always assumed that the rubbish means something to someone, somewhere. That said, 040003 above is just ridiculous!

Are you sure Carlilse to Newcastle has been 'corrected', as far as I can see it still says:

"GN MM+TP MM+WY+LY+NE NC+MH+TP NE+LY+WY+GM+NW"

However, on the return you can only use GN as the Newcastle to Carilse route has been corrected...

I wish i'd known about this a few years ago when I was at uni in Manchester. It would have made trips back to Carlisle even cheaper...

The NRG says....

....Step 6

Identify the route code using Section C

Once you have identified the Routeing Point you are travelling from click on the station name of the routeing point and the Routeing Permissions will be displayed in the centre window.

The centre window shows the route codes between every pair of routeing point stations.r Because route permissions are the same in both directions of travel you may use the routeing permissions in either direction. The route codes will be the same.
....

I take this to mean that Carlisle-Newcastle tickets are valid via Leeds both ways, but Newcastle-Carlisle tickets are not valid via Leeds in either direction, although I suspect that is a matter of interpretation.
