When I renewed my railcard online in February I replaced a physical railcard with an app based one, which then wouldn’t work until I contacted customer services who told me that there was an issue with the picture I uploaded, but the website did not ask me to upload a picture when I renewed, so I don’t know how well it works at the best of times.

No rush on this now. Was to have been a renewal for a friend who doesn't do internet stuff. The expiry date has now passed, and so will re-apply as and when, as no immediate rail journeys are planned. And yes, would have been a physical card.

You can still renew a railcard within a certain time of it expiring.

Apart from one there is no concept of renewing with Railcards

Except that there is. If you renew within a month of the existing one expiring you get a new one with an expiry date 1 or 3 years after the expiry of the current one.

That's not so good as you'd lose up to a month of validity. Been bad enough already with no railcard extensions after we were all asked not to travel.

That’s advanice dating. There is no bonus or penalty fir renewing/not renewing
