Online Mapping

I saw a site, I think it was linked from here somewhen, that would allow you to view maps like the screenshot below:

It covered the railways/stations etc in detail, as well as property boundaries. It was free and covered the whole of the UK. Similar to Google maps

Can anyone remember the site? I thought it was the land registry site, but the only thing they have costs £3 per address to look up.

Ita called Geographic Information Systems or GIS.

The national map is provided on a contract basis to customers who have to restrict how much of it is publicised, often with a "watermark" which overlays their logo over each map. Its available at various resolutions/scales and whats' so spcial about the system is that each customer can add their own layers of additional information.
Most large Local Authorities will have access to it and will add infomation relating to, say, Planning Applications and let web users access it to look at local developments on-line, or, say, street lights which will be available to their local engineers.

There's even a commercial app called Capscan which lets you search the UK by postcode and then look at the map with a layer pin-pointing your favourite supermarket or bank!

I don't know of a public way into a GIS map with rail info, but if you start from the Local Council web site for the area you're interested in, then you can zoom and pan to the location you want. Slow but useable.

GIS is available through athens if your uni Geography / Geology dept has paid up...

I think some people are getting confused with the definition of GIS (Geograhical Information Systems) The above example is GIS but it is not the only GIS. So you it does make sense to say you have access to GIS
