It seems DSI is now six months!!!!



Seems I was wrong and Northern have changed their own rules, you used to be able to resit it as soon as you next applied.

Things do tend to take an age with railway jobs & shortlisting, to-date I've got applications with FTPE since December, who just chuck out a standard response email when you ask why it's taking soooo long! Metrolink took around 9 weeks to shortlist 1500 candidates!

It is very clear that with a railway job, the conditions of pay & extras like massively reduced rail travel etc. the world & it's wife are applying for jobs that a few years ago they wouldn't have touched with a barge pole. I think we've just got to grin & bear it!

Big industry change for me coming from finance / insurance where i've been for the last 11yrs until redundancy last December.
Looking to finally have a career in an area that I actually have an interest so it's good to get some details on how the process works.

yep i got mine back wirth the same answer! although i know i did wrong as at the beginning of the 18 its asks " do you work well on your own" and although i do i didint want them to think i didnt work well as part of a team, then later on you get "do you work well as part of a team" i replied neither to both as i do work well in both roles, but it would have looked like i didnt do either!1 so 6 month wait for me but its all learning, anyone knw what is after this test??

I went with the "I work better on my own"

What’s hard about this test is that in some cases the opposite answer 'seems' more appropriate to the job it's not to say that I couldn't have answered "I tend to be cautious when making decisions" it's just that I felt working on my own was more suitable and didn't want to appear indecisive.

So simple yet.. so many have failed.. !!

Ask me again and I still don't know which I would answer probably "I work better on my own" !

Yeah I applied for them and did the DSI tests within minutes of each other!?

I still have yet to hear back about the Liverpool Lime St positions too! Has anyone else applied for Lime St? Have you heard back yet?

ye the curious thing is i also stated that i worked better on my own considering that as a driver that would be the case,i dunno it looks as tho the lunatics have definetely taken over the asylum at northern,!!

The point of these tests is to ensure that people are responding consistently in line with their natural characteristics / inclinations. That's why you'll find some questions are variants on ones they've already asked.

You're not supposed to second guess what the company is looking for since, as has already been mentioned, there are no right or wrong answers. Far better to select the one that springs in to your head as being most like you rather than forcing an answer that may not be what they want in the first place. Hope this post makes sense...

I too went against the flow with team work, I didn't miss any questions with the neither option but one question I couldn't change the answer ended up with all 3 selected so I pressed next and it reset the question???

when i re-read the application it does state you work on your 90% of the time but then work as a team, as i clicked neither to these im 100% sure this is where i failed, i wont make the same mistake twice!!

Only just sprung to mind, but very often when they compile psychometric tests they will test a number of people already working within a role (and probably good at their job) and look for "norms" or the majority answer. Therefore, if new entrants are far removed in their responses from the majority of those already working effectively, they may think you are not going to be as effective a driver as those already in the job. Does this make sense? There are literally thousands of psychometric tests out there for different roles and this is an area a bit beyond my knowledge...

I passed the DSI last week but judging from other people's failures i'm not really sure why I passed? It certainly doesn't seem like any exact science with these answers. I do think that if you spend too long thinking about each one though that you're less likely to give the honest answer but even so it seems a little confusing. :-?

I personally think I tried to match some of my answers.. How would a Train Driver answer this instead of how I would answer the question.

I think some of the questions lead you to answer against yourself.. which is a tad frustrating..! in other words it's as much about what you don't select as much as what you do..?

Take the other question "I usually make very quick decisions" is that to say that a "completely reliable" candidate is not capable of making a quick decision ?

Are they looking for a reliable candidate or one that will act impulsively - if not necessarily instinctively.

I'd say you could rely on me to make a quick decision when the time is right, without causing a knock on effect.. but then I would say that!!

Because we don't know how the results are interpreted it's impossible to judge the 'test' we may have been one question out, or so predictable with our answers that the results are clearly not natural..

i.e
The benchmark could be 75-85 anything below isn't suitable anything above isn't natural.

I had a question about 'regrets' things said and done, we all have regrets but you have to live and learn from them... right?

I went with the other option (although I can't remember what it was now) I thought a person who regrets 'the' things they've said and done implies that 'the person' often makes these errors of judgement as in "I was soooo Drunk last night I can't believe I said/did that....) this is another question where the answer seemed so obvious...

If I applied all the opposite answers to my test I'm sure I could predict the end result.. I think that's what makes failing so confusing?

Pretty sure that I put that I work better as part of a team though I was worried about this one for the reasons you mention - spending 90% of my time on my own.

I wonder if maybe people look too deep into the questions though? I just read the examples, decided which one sounded most like me and selected it. :?

Some of them seemed slightly contradictory though as they were mentioned again but not in quite the same pairings.

I remember how that feels when i did mine we started with 12 people and ended up with one pass the second time round 8 out of 10 passed you will get there.
