How much would a one-way excess to allow First Class travel be on a £38.70 (route "Any Permitted") Standard Class Off Peak Return from Manchester Stns to/from York, for the return leg (only), i.e. back from York to Manchester? At the weekend, a First Class upgrade (with TPE) would be £15, but how much extra is it to do so midweek?

Reckon that would be £37.90.

First Class Anytime Short Distance Return = £114.50
Ticket already held = £38.70

Difference between fare held and appropriate first class fare = £75.80

Divided by two to upgrade one way only = £37.90

It should be the difference between the fare paid and the sum of the appropriate Singles, or the full difference between the Returns if cheaper.

The Off-Peak Single is £37.70 and the First Class Anytime Day Single is £57.30, for a total of £95.00. That would make the upgrade £56.30.

Thanks. Tad expensive that. Will maybe do such a First Class upgrade on my next weekend trip to York (or up to Edinburgh).

That would make the upgrade only £1 cheaper than just buying a first class ticket. The saving is only £1 because the off-peak single is only £1 cheaper than the return.

Whilst officially it should be £56.30, many guards will just do you the difference standard single to 1st class single for one leg, which is £19.60. Obviously this is reliant on discretion etc

There is a trial of a Midweek First Class Upgrade of £20 between Manchester and York and vv. Only available on the Liverpool- Newcastle services, only available to buy on board (like the weekend upgrade) but only after 0900 Mon to Fri.

This may work for you.

Noted, thanks. Is this upgrade offer further detailed anywhere?
