Its a junction indicator indicating a diverging route has been set.

Double flashing yellow- single flashing yellow- single yellow with route indicator- be prepared to stop, next ones red.

It was devised to get over the old system of the diverging aspect being held at red until approach lit by the train. This was thought to speed up the junction process, but in reality it means the train is stopping just one block further on- thus hardly likely to be setting speed records.

I know 66001 when it came accross the pond, didn't have the cover over the horns? but that's now change and there just like the rest of them...

001 and 002 do not have buckeyes, therefore cannot be used on HTA coal trains with buckeyes raised etc

The junction signal could be any aspect but red, but you have to assume that it will be a Y and drive accordingly as if you would be stopping at the next peg.

We have a number of junctions with flashing yellows and it's very common to get Flashing YY - Flashing Y - G and no reds anywhere else. You'll only get thrown a red once you're around the corner if you need to be stopped for some other reason, like another train ahead.

It's still a quicker system than the old approach controlled junction. With this the signal wouldn't clear until after you've gone over the AWS magnet, so you were probably down to about 10mph there anyway. At least with this one you can make a judgement about your speed as soon as you catch sight of the junction signal plus, using your route knowledge, you know how far it is to the next signal in case it is red and can be braking for that one. You may not be setting any speed records or even taking the junction at the full linespeed, but this system does get you across the points and onto the diverging route much more quickly.

1. You will never find them allocated to EWS Energy due to no knuckle couplers. The positioning of the lifting lugs on the front ends would have affected the operation of the swinging mechanism.
2. The bodyside grilles are painted red (rather than black as with the other 248 ).


Q6. 37796 to 37803 differ from the rest of the class 37/7's because...?
GEC alternators as opposed to Brush (as on the rest of the heavyweights.)

All the above could be condensed into- "stopping one block on". Now why didn`t i think of that ?

I'm sorry, that isn't correct. There is no restriction (location-wise or otherwise) on 001/002 other than being non-coal locos.

the junction signal CAN be red, IF the divergent route is blocked beyond the junction signal.
this was the fatal mistake made by the driver of the manchester bound train in the colwich crash. He assumed that the junction signal would be showing a proceed aspect, having had flashing yellow and flashing double-yellow and hence misjudged his braking distance causing his train to overrun the signal and collide with the train from liverpool which had already been given a clear road through the junction crossover.
The junction signal would have cleared automatically as soon as the junction track circuit became unoccupied.

If the junction signal was red, then the preceding signals CANNOT flash. Instead, you would get the normal signalling sequence of G - YY - Y - R. The whole point of having flashing yellow signals is that it shows that the diverging route IS set and clear, at least as far as the first signal AFTER the junction signal. There is no way that you would get flashing yellows and then a red unless something drastic happened and the signaller had to put the road back on you at the very last minute.

The mistake made by the driver of the Manchester train (one that has been repeated, though not with such drastic consequences) was that he assumed the cautionary signals were flashing as per usual and failed to correctly identify that he was seeing STEADY yellows to warn him of a red further up the road.

As I understand the Colwich accident, the driver did receive flashing YY (1) and flashing Y (2), but these were related to the Down Fast to Down Slow crossover prior to Colwich Junction itself. The signal protecting that crossover was displaying a steady yellow + junction indicator (3), and he failed to recognise that this meant that the next signal was at danger (4). That next signal was the one protecting Colwich Junction itself, where the Down Slow crossed the Up Fast - the train coming to a stand on the diamond crossing.

Hopefully no-one objects to the attached screenshot from Simsig, which I've used purely to illustrate the layout. The numbers that I've added relate to the description above, and not real signal numbers. Note that, with the route set only as far as signal "4", "3" has reverted to approach control from red, presumably as a result of modifications following the accident.

Anyhow, I know that the answer has already been given, and I'm going on differences between US and UK rail conventions here...But as 66001 and 66002 were effectively prototypes and therefore originally built to American standards, wouldn't the drivers controls in both units be on the right-hand side of the cab, as opposed to the left? 8)
