On some lines could double deckers be cheaper than platform extensions

Thanks for that jcollins, I always knew that the A60's were the widest stock in the UK but I wasn't sure about D78's, thanks again.

Network Rail have just reiterated in the finalised version of the London and SE RUS (published yesterday) that the infrastructure changes for double deck trains (eg on the lines from Waterloo) are too expensive, and in any case the stock cannot provide the capacity increase needed.

If 3m boxes are possible on HS1 with well-wagons then it should be possible to find a profile which will allow a true double-deck carriage between bogies for such routes. Indeed, I expect Eurostar to request this no later than this autumn, the logic being the apparently revised Tunnel rules.
