Recently advertised for this role at various depots. Does anyone know what exactly they do and what the salary is?

Good question. They call their guards/traincrew "Train Managers" but reading the job description, this appears to be more like a Conductor / Guards Manager, a line manager role. Reading indepth it is definitely a line manager's job.

The role of an On-Board Manager at Avanti West Coast is essential to our success, with a focus on our people and customer experience. We are looking to build a Talent Bank in various locations to ensure we have great people ready to raise the bar when we need them.

This is a people orientated role within which you are responsible for a large dedicated team of on-board crews who deliver the service to our customers.

You'll be responsible for leading and engaging this group of people to 'win together' and deliver a consistent level of excellence in customer service. You will be instrumental 'sharing your spark' and making the company vision and brand values live through involvement of your team.

Role responsibilities:
  • Be accountable for managing behaviours in line with the business values, supervising performance, sickness absence and availability levels of your team and ensuring that you provide feedback and address issues that may arise.
  • Be required to lead and own the implementation of any planned changes and to support on board teams with any new commercial activities.
  • Responsible for the safety of your On-Board teams ensuring compliance with safety standards.
  • Manage budgets in line with Finance Business Partner
  • Ensure the delivery of great customer service in all circumstances
  • This post holds an 'On Call' commitment and requires flexibility to work hours that suit the railway environment.

OBMs manage Train Managers and/or onboard caterers/chefs. This is a staff management role dealing with sickness, managing competency etc... I'm unsure about the salary unfortunately.
