Now stuck on 1S14 just north of Hambleton Junction for over two and half with no proper communication. we are told we are to be evacuated onto an adjacent special train. However there are rumours flying about that instead of going North we are to go back to Doncaster. Does anybody know what is actually going on?! When are going to be rescued?

Stuck in 1N07 behind you. NR faults show an overhead line problem as your train tripped multiple section breakers while you came to a stand.

A 1Z99 showing in platform 6 at York, usually a sign of something being sent to rescue, but it has been there for 15 minutes. (Scrambled from Newark at 1415)

We have BT police on the train plus a Network Rail incident commander

Allegedly 1Y16 14:27 Newcastle to London Kings Cross has been identified as the evacuation train (i.e. everyone on the broken 1S14 will have to perform a controlled evacuation, I'm guessing by walking across a ramp from one door on 1S14 to an adjacent door on 1Y16.

If this is the case, this could well answer the rumour of (passengers on 1S14) being sent back to Doncaster (then I guess board another Scotland bound train which would have to divert via Leeds?)

Although I note 1Y16 is only a 5-car train!

None of this is confirmed to be the case though and even if it is the intention to do this, it could well change.

(Edited for clarity)

Somewhere, not in London
And this decision takes longer than the stand up time of the batteries to even make. Let alone action.
And we wonder why self evacuations are such a problem?

LNER now saying do not travel. On the 1600 KGX to Aberdeen which left around 15 mins late. Presuming we might divert via Leeds?

Diversions go via Ferrybridge rather than Leeds. The northbound Inverness service, which was following 1S14, went that way earlier.

Correction, sorry, the Inverness went via Leeds. One Grand Central train in each direction has gone via Ferrybridge.

i think they should have taken the decision to evacuate us much sooner. We are now on the rescue train having been at this location for over 4 hours!
People are now very worried about onward journey arrangements.

It's been highlighted on the staff disruption messages that pax mustn't divert via the MML due to flooding affecting EMR services.

Very poor staff on 1N07 that I was stuck in outside Doncaster for over an hour. Very few updates forthcoming, and when I dared suggest that passengers be informed that the train would stop and terminate at Doncaster, a very dismissive response to myself and surrounding passengers.

As an aside, might anyone have information on what happened to 1S16 as the reason for being stuck behind that train for a long time was something that wasn't explained at all.

Not so much flooding, but more so that EMR services would be totally overwhelmed by additional ECML pax. EMR services are often full and standing anyway, before adding more passengers on an already overcrowded service.

Services should now be able to head north through the affected area now - diesel mode or slow speed coasting/GU 'limp' mode for electrics.

I was on 1S19, the 14:03 from Kings Cross to Aberdeen. With a planned connection at York to my final destination of Scarborough. The train was held at Peterborough for 2 hours. Passengers were getting a lot of mixed messages from staff, several said the issue was north of Doncaster but a TM said it was south of Doncaster and therefore there were no trains at all north of Peterborough. It turns out that actually the Leeds trains were running with just a few minutes of delay, so not sure if that was an intentional strategy to stop people overloading the Leeds trains or if the staff genuinely didn’t know. Anyway, by the time the next Leeds train pulled into the adjacent platform it was quite obvious the TM wasn’t correct.

Having moved to that Leeds train I ended up at Doncaster where it looked like several trains worth of people had just been detrained and there was total carnage trying to get onto my Leeds train, so I got off and got the Northern train to Scarborough instead, which is very quiet.

One poor passenger who boarded at Peterborough bound for Newcastle was told, after waiting on the train for about an hour, to get off and go towards London then get a Carlisle train from Euston and then onwards Northern connection to Newcastle. If he followed that advice he may have struggled to even get to Newcastle tonight. If he had got on the Leeds train in the first place he would almost be home by now on a TPE or XC.

I boarded 1N11 1633 Kings Cross-Newcastle at Kings Cross, only to find it cancelled 10 minutes before departure. I bailed to the GN service.

Other than 1D24 I’ve not seen anything go north since.

There was a 5 car Azuma occupying platform 10 at Kings Cross at 5pm this evening. I have only seen Grand Central or Hull Trains using the suburban platforms previously.

That sucked, but eventually got to York about three hours later than I was expecting. It sounds like it could have been a lot worse.

That's 1Y84 from York (well, Doncaster today) which is booked into Platform 10. It doesn't stay long before running out to Bowes Park and back into KGX (P8) to form 1N86 to Middlesbrough.

It does see some limited booked use - namely the Hull arrival on weekday mornings which goes back out as a Harrogate.

As @D1537 says it also gets a York arrival which needs to clear the platform as a GN service needs it shortly after.

The train manager on my train was very apologetic but simply didn't have any information to give us as he had no communication from control. Presumably they were a bit busy with trains and crew all over the shop...

The impression I'm getting here is of another example of chaos, poor communication and conflicting messages and advice when things fall apart...

After 200 years, you'd think the railway would be a bit better at disruption management, they've had plenty of practice.

Alternatively, you could argue that after 200 years, that significant incidents are inherently difficult to manage with the resources available and hence you get similar results each time.

Not saying this is true, nor should all parties not strive for better but just thought I'd play devil's advocacte.

What is possibly more of a thing is that despite the massive advances in technology, the way disruption is handled seems to be if anything getting worse, which is the opposite to what we’d ordinarily expect. I’m sure staff training is one part of that, and possibly the general reduction in staffing levels generally. I guess a flip side of this coin is there are more trains on the network than a generation ago.
