Yes I'd agree with that. I was simply referring to how they advertise the splitting services. Perhaps Norman Baker MP (remember he commented on useless announcements a few weeks back) has written to Southern as they operate in his constituency.

TPE specialise in some really verbose and irritating automated announcements warning of ways they can extract money from you, for example if you've chosen to walk past a ticket office (do we really need to know they comply with the national conditions of carriage?).

I don't care much for a silent train carriage, though. Far better ten minutes of terms and conditions between every station. Saves confusion. At least that way, by the time the guard gets to you, you know that you should have bought that ticket in the first place.

I think RJ will be happy to know they do; after all EMT keep telling him the NRCoC doesn't apply to them! ;)

At the start of a route, the driver puts a PIS Code in on a 185. This 4-digit PIS Code appears under the first line of the service he is driving printed on the docket.

At any time, the guard or driver can select additional non-standard announcements, such as....

Please have all tickets ready,
First Class Front
First Class Rear
Trolley
Delay / signal failure
Smoking
Delay / failed train infront etc
....and many more including.....

Major incident, all staff have left the train, stay on board,
Delay fatality,

There is the facility to pause the normal (GPS-based) announcements, at the point they become annoying. There are also a range of silent codes which display the Destination only, with no announcements, useful for night services where proper manual announcements are often more appropriate.

Is it just me or are the emergency and delay announcements just a waste of time? Does anyone use them? I'm willing to accept its just me but if delayed or involved in an incident the very least you can do is make a manual announcment.

Plus by the time you have fiddled around with finding the right codes or flicking through computer display menus to find an announcment which suits the situation you would probably be quicker picking up the handset and saying 'apologies for the delay, it's due to a signal Failiure' etc.

No it's me as well. Automatic announcements for delays just sound insincere. Far better to give it the personal touch.

I've been on quite a few TPX 185s that have had ***Can a Member of Staff please answer the Intercom*** without an audible announcement scrolling across the internal displays

Yeah that set up has always stuck me as a bit odd, shouldn't there logically be some sort of audible alert to attract the attention of any staff on board?
