On a train but the guard is in another unit

I'm on a train without a ticket as I got held up on the way to the station. I am traveling on a warrant so no issue there, my issue is I need a return and the guard is in the other set so I can't ask them.

Can I buy one at a station or do I need to see the guard when we stop at London?

If you can find the guard to exchange your warrant on arrival, do that, if not ask at the barriers, or the excess tickets window, if no to all of those, head to the ticket office on arrival.

I'd just like to point out that whilst there are genuine reasons to board a train without a valid ticket, your late arrival at the station is not one of them. If you boarded the train in a Penalty Fare Scheme Area and there was an open ticket office, you may have additional concerns to worry about.

The guard may not be able to sort a ticket out while performing 'station duties' (especially for a warrant!).

...where you should be issued a Penalty Fare or sold a full anytime ticket unless the booking office at your starting station was closed, in which case you will be able to buy any ticket except those with a Railcard discount.
