I would be very interested to hear from people who have obtained ANY Olympics tickets for next year. Most people I know haven't had any allocated to them, despite bidding hundreds of pounds for a wide variety of them!

I can see why it would be, for the atmosphere and everything - but I'm sure so many people would appreciate it more than me. I'm quite happy having seen the construction progress of the stadium from the comfort of a Hastings DEMU a couple of times

I think that the whole process is a total sham. There was absolutely no way everyone would get tickets and I doubt they will in the second ballot. It was obvious right from the start that the majority of the tickets would go to corporate sponsors of the Olympics.
I shall be going to be Olympics for nothing by simply staying at home.

My understanding is that the random selection was used to prevent the servers from being overloaded with requests. If it had been first-come first-serve system, then there would almost certainly have been too many people trying to buy at once, and the website would have gone down.
i've never been bothered about this coming Olympic games or any other. I was briefly interested in 2000 during the rowing (for a couple of mnutes during the race), otherwise I couldn't care less.
Good luck to those who do enjoy it though. Like Mrs Greenback, who applied for tickets but didn't get any! She might get soem to the football in Cardiff though!

Personally speaking, since all the main events will be on television, why should I have to endure the strange lottery system for tickets, the travel to the events, finding your way around crowded stadiums, watching out for the usual gangs of Bulgarian and Romanian pickpockets etc, etc. Do you think that all this is worth enduring, so you can say "I was there, absorbing all the atmosphere...."

I aim to be working for the entire duration. I can't stand watching the Olympics on TV, and I've no interest in going. I'm sure atmosphere will be as easily soaked up as I drive myself closer to the impending high blood pressure diagnosis by using public transport and working in London over that period. Hopefully slightly negated by any additional wages wangled for working in London over that time.

Photographing trains in London next summer, should be fun with all the security. I will be avoiding London at all costs during the duration of the olympic's
The atmosphere in China was amazing. I am quite happy to say 'I was there'.
To be honest, the atmosphere is probably the main reason I would have liked to get tickets (that and being so close to everything), but we only put in for the cheap ones and there were probably as many £20 tickets as the cheapest advanced tickets on an Intercity train!
I will watch bits on the TV, but I am not actually that bothered about most of the events... but the atmosphere is amazing and I think that despite all the money spent, it will be a memorable occasion and one that people who sat at home will feel they missed out on, if only a little bit.
The amount of tickets reserved for corporates and hospitality is a problem, but that's the same as how Wembley stadium was designed. Given I was a VIP guest of Sony at the Champions League final, I suppose I am not in a position to comment on how I don't actually think it's a good thing!

Won't change much for me, will just be busyer in Manchester, don't even know when the Olympics are, but as usual I'll avoid London anyway.
Sorry, I really don't think I will feel I am missing out at all! I didn;t go to Live Aid in 1985 either, which by all accounts was a marvellous occasion, but I don't feel I misse dout on that either!

Agreed. Remember, not everyone enjoys live events.
The only thing people will be 'missing out' on is the possibility of missing out on tickets.

With the current financial situation affecting most people, you cannot compare a visit to the one in China, which was made in a different financial climate. I am sure that your travel costs were not small!!
I am glad that you have highlighted the "corporate hospitality" aspect of matters. The numbers of tickets available to people entering the ticket lottery were not the total amount of tickets available. A spokesman on the television was very unhappy that this point was raised and said that the sponsors had to have their "share" of the tickets as part of the sponsorship arrangements.
Does anyone know on this thread EXACTLY what was the percentage of the total tickets that were reserved for "corporate hospitality" useage?

There are few things I would like less than attending any of the events at the olympics next year. I dislike London at the best of times and the olympics will be far from the best of times. I may watch some of it on TV but it occurs to me that it could be a good time to go for some trips with an ALR, avoiding the south-east.

I'm really not interested in the Olympics. The closest I'll get to watching it is if there's a TV on in the background with it on.

I bet the people of Maze Hill, Kidbrooke, Westcombe Park and Woolwich Dockyard are all looking forward to massive service cuts - Maze Hill has no E/B in the afternoon and no W/B trains in the morning, Kidbrooke and Westcombe Park will both receive just 2tph in each direction - 66% of the normal service, and Woolwich Arsenal is closed fully. All of the above will be in effect for the full duration of the Olympics... don't you just love it?

If that was not a subtle sympathy ploy, arranged for Boris to say..."Well , this lottery was so fair, that like many other Londoners, I too did not win", then this will be an opportunity missed.
I am sure that Tony Blair if he had been in that positon would have played this ploy for all it was worth....with a little help from a certain Mr. A.Campbell.
