Hi

I have noticed our weekend train service on the District Line London Underground operator has been reduced to nothing.

It was either the 18th or 19th March when it became suspended all day due to an apparent signal failure.

Same all last weekend, the 25th and 26th March.

And what do you know, today 1st April, suspended again!

It is bad enough that we lost our full Train service on this route, but weekends being constantly disrupted is unacceptable.

How long does it take to fix a signal failure?

It’s an issue with 32B points at Earl’s Court. These allow trains to cross from platform 4 to West Kensington and Olympia. As the route from High Street Kensington only brings you out into platform 4 it isn’t possible to run the service as carrying out a reversal move at Earls Court would be too disruptive.

A new set is being cast but this takes time.

I would be good if TfL could share this information and put a timescale on it. Just cancelling every weekend even though you know it will take weeks to resolve the issue isn't great.

Or every half hour divert one of the Wimbledon (ex city trains) to Olympia, and run the what would have been Kensington High Street to Kensington Olympia trains to Wimbledon instead. At least that would be something.

So does this mean that movements from Edgware Rd / High St Ken to the west, as opposed to turning south at Earls Court as virtually all scheduled services do, is also now impossible? Doesn't that affect early/late stock movements for Wimbleware route trains to access the Acton Town depot etc?

yep, all trains from Edgware Road/High Street have to run to PG/Wimbledon.
Early or late trains are diverted or stabled early

Indeed, Wimbledon trains from Tower Hill/Barking operate every 20min.

Have they finally sorted this? District line currently reporting a good service according to the LT website.

No; first train from Earls Court to Olympia isn’t until 07.54 on Sundays so it would show ‘good service’ until just around then.

Why is it taking so long to fix?

And would somebody in their office not use some common sense and advertise on the homepage that the service will not be running today? Rather than expect passengers to wait till first train time and see if the message appears.

I assume judging by what you have said they already know it will not be running today. So why keep passengers in the dark as long as possible?

That's pretty poor (but par for the course). Anyone checking early morning before setting off a little later would get no warning of a problem that TfL could have told them about.

On the other hand, on my several Underground journeys in the last few weeks, I've each time been assailed by frequent announcements (irrespective of what line I've been on) that the District is "part suspended" between Earls Court and Olympia. For a minor and infreaquent service (with a diversion available, as well as a bus alternative if required) which doesn't even run every day (I believe that's still the case?), I've been surprised to keep hearing it.

But I echo the question - why so long anyway?

More or less on this topic - ie constraints on platform usage at Earls Court - I understand the explanation earlier in this thread about the line from High St Ken coming up on the south side at Earls Court, hence only being able to access the one westbound platform there, means that the points which are currently out of order stop those services from afterwards proceeding west rather than south. But as far as I can see, there's also a constraint - which there doesn't so self-evidently need to be - for trains coming from the south into the eastbound platforms at Earls Court.

These arrivals can only access platform 2. Yet most of them are destined to "turn left" after Earls Court, and hence there would be fewer conflicting movements east of the station if they could arrive on platform 1. Assuming that most trains from the west will arrive onto platform 1 [though they could come in on 2], to balance the platform loadings with the services from the south being confined to 2, and given, also, that after leaving 2 you can switch to the line out of 1 immediately, but the opposite move (to head east rather than north from 1) is only possible at the last moment before the north-most track turns north, then surely this means that the stretch of track due east of 1 must carry the vast majority of trains leaving Earls Court eastbound, with the stretch of track due east of 2 carrying quite a small proportion.

To my amateur logic, this seems an unnecessary restriction on flexibility at Earls Court. Is it not possible for trains from the south to be allowed the option of arriving into 1, and/or for there to be a switch possible "from 1 to 2" immediately after the station, as well as vice versa?

The Olympia bus service was only provided on weekdays when the train service is not scheduled to operate.

As said up thread, a new part needs to be manufactured. (hoping for this Monday evening).

Eastbound trains from West Brompton can access both platforms 1 & 2, and routinely do.

Thanks. Re the bus, I'd assumed there was (still) an "ordinary" bus which made that connection, giving an option when the shuttle isn't running (for whatever reason!) without a dog-leg via the Overground.

Re the trains ex-West Brompton being able to access both 1 & 2 ... maybe it's my memory. I was sure some time back it wasn't the case, just from having a look when traveling through. And indeed the last time I saw a track diagram for the area it didn't show that option. Has that possibility been introduced/re-introduced as part of the recent signalling changes on the District? (Or is it really my memory...)

I was in London on Thursday and Friday last week and, certainly at least on the Friday, definitely saw trains at Earl's Court displaying Olympia as the destination.

With an infrequent/intermittent service to Olympia - even when it's running normally - would there be any point in having a notice on platforms 3/4 at Earls Court saying something like, "If no Olympia train is due, it might be quicker to take the next train to West Brompton and use the Overground from there."? How far away (time-wise) would the next Olympia service have to be for this advice to make sense?

I can't recall the exact wording, but there already is signage on those platforms at Earl's Court with wording to that effect.

The existing signs at Earl's Court are - "For Kensington (Olympia) take the first Wimbledon train and change at West Brompton for the Overground service." Then underneath - "Services to Kensington (Olympia) operate at weekends and public holidays only."

As expected, this issue was resolved overnight and trains can now run from pfm.4 to Olympia/Ealing/Richmond.

Hi - thanks both. Though that's potentially ambiguous - maybe the second sentence ought to refer to "Direct services...". Visitors might think the "weekends/holidays only" refers to the information above re getting to Olympia via the Overground.
