I can understand the need to replace life-expired kit on the electric lines but just how much additional power resource is needed for the full Crossrail service? Apart from the ultimate use of all 10-car class 345s and a short section from the Bow portals, won't the frequency of trains and the load that they present be much the same as now?

Nearly twice the load. Longer and much, much more powerful. Add in all the new Anglia fleet, and a likely increase in electric freight, and it’s a serious lift in power required.

Ah, thanks - that sounds like the whole picture, which I can see would seriously affect the whole four track formation's supply.
I was thinking about the reason being offered was that Crossrail was the reason. Since the 345s have been deployed (albeit as 7-car sets) they have been running a metro service that has long been there on the inner GEML, and a similar service density to the eventual full rollout of Crossrail - which is limited by the line's capacity anyway. Furthermore, although the 345's maximum power draw is higher, it would be over a shorter period and some would be returned on braking so on a start-stop service, maybe there isn't that much difference in net power draw when something like 16+ trains are simultaneously running on the up and down'Electric' lines.

There's something like (off the top of my head) 1.2MW more demand on the 9-car units, versus the 7-car units. The vehicles removed from the FLU are 2 x MS3 vehicles, leaving 2 x DMS, 2 x PMS, 2 x MS1 and 1 x TS(W) as the formation of the RLU.

Indeed. I've also seen rumours abounding on a Faceache page for OLE Engineers/linesfolk that extension of AT-feeding eastwards might occur, although they're only just that - rumours - at this stage.

There’s still quite a bit of Mk1 about, albeit in slower areas in Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool and Glasgow. I also believe that the slow lines on the southern WCML retain their original contact arms. Let’s not forget that the OHLE on the Styal line is the oldest on the WCML as it was used as a test for the rest of the WCML and for the proposed electric locomotives and multiple units - It must have been completed sometime around 1962.

The Manchester-Crewe section of the electrification scheme was opened on 12 September 1960.

Fairly sure there was some heavy refurbishment beyond Upminster about 15 years ago.

Christmas 2006 between Laindon / Stanford Le Hope and Shoeburyness as I recall.

would my assumption be during the Fenchurch street - Barking renewal all c2c services would just be diverted to Liverpool street?

Some services but not all. There just isn't the space for them all at Liverpool Street.

NR have also published dates and extents of possessions for the work.

Network Rail said:
Works will take place on the following dates this autumn:

Sunday 18 October
Sunday 25 October
Sunday 1 November
Sunday 8 November
Sunday 15 November
Sunday 22 November

The following services into London will be affected by these works:

TfL Rail

Services will be suspended on these dates with bus replacement services operating to provide a connection to the Central line at Newbury Park.
Greater Anglia services:

Except for Sunday 1 and 8 November (Remembrance Sunday), London bound Greater Anglia services from Norwich will terminate at Ipswich. A rail replacement bus service will be in operation between Ipswich and Newbury Park, between Witham and Braintree and between Marks Tey and Sudbury calling at stations inbetween.
Train services from Southend Victoria and Southminster will terminate at Billericay with bus replacement services in place.
On Sunday 1 November, London bound trains will terminate at Colchester with a bus replacement service calling at all stations and connecting to Newbury Park for the Central line.
Train services into London will be available on 8 November (Remembrance Sunday)

Does anyone know why the entire GEML is shut west of Ipswich on the 18/10, 25/10, 15/11 & 22/11? Could it be something to do with the new feeder at Springfield (between Chelmsford & Hatfield Peverel) being commissioned, or neutral sections being rationalised?
I can appreciate the boundary for the Southend branch at Billericay, as a trio of neutral sections electrically separate the branch from the GEML at Shenfield.

There is other work going on around Colchester in connection with the programme of Track Renewals there.

One advantage of Covid-19 is that if it had not happened, the Sunday engineering work would have been a right pain in the behind for me attending the NFL London games. Now these have been cancelled, this is no longer an issue.

I note that the publicity refers to buses Ipswich to Newbury Park (for London) is this the first time the bus replacement has been planned to operate so far? Add in bus replacement on the Clacton branch it’s no trips to London at weekends this side of the New Year for me!

Filth sir ethays been done before.

Wot e said. Yes it has been done before.

Having passed a few Rail Replacement buses today on the A140 doing the Ipswich - Norwich block it will be interesting to see what vehicles turn up. Normally it is a coach operation of reasonable to good quality, but saw some double deck buses today. Could be Covid related to give people more space, but not desperately comfortable for a longish journey.

Having you quote my post meant I could see it, and what a load of typo tripe it was. Now corrected!

But, to slightly misquote a comment on the BBC website years ago, the benefit of being tipped off a train for engineering work somewhere in Norfolk is that there is always a close family member nearby to pick you up.
