Old Vending Machines....

Seeing the thread on Platform Tickets reminded me of the time a lot of places had the old mechanical type jobbies.

You used to put your penny or sixpence in and turn the handle with baited breath hoping the product would come out.

I used to get Beechnut Chewing Gum - who remembers that ?

Of course the shops were not open such extensive hours and these were often your only source of confectionery.

Also I remember the big blue Flavoured Milk ones that doled out cartons.

There must be a big vending machine "scrapyard" somewhere

Many years ago, on Manchester Central station, was a large machine (painted bright red) with a shiny silver-painted metal arrow that you turned to face a specific letter on the perimeter, then you plunged a side handle, and continued until you had punched out the words you wanted, on an aluminium strip that came out of the machine.

Do any of our older member remember these machines in stations in their areas. I think that they were only installed on large stations.

Yes I remember those machines, and packs of Beech Nut gum.

On Nottingham Midland (as was) station there used to be a machine that dispensed oblong boxes of Paynes Poppets. I think the boxes were red, and the sweets inside were round chocolate covered toffee, if my memory is correct.

I used to pester my Dad for a sixpence, which is probably why he began to be less enthusiastic about taking me to stations with time.

Yes, it's at the end of Southport pier. Old arcade games, vending machines and everything like that - it's a geriatric's paradise.

The best bit: everything still runs on old pennies (the massive ones). If you don't have any lying around you can convert 'modern' money when you get there.

I *think* it's 10 new new (sic) pence to the old penny but I could be wrong as it's a while since I was there.

I have genuinely no idea where they get their pennies from though - they're all genuine 1930s ish issue coins and there can't too many of them floating round...

They've even done a deal with a modern-day sweet manufacturers to get stuff that will fit in all the old machines so you can satisfy your craving!

I have since been informed that such a similar machine was also installed at the main line station at Liverpool Central station.

Is the one at the NRM situated in The Warehouse?
