Intercity Class 125
FTP Class 158
NX Scotrail Class 158 (1st Class)

The old InterCity adverts are good if you want videos of the 125, if you don't mind a lot of people - and ol'Jim.

Here's a couple of the old British Rail adverts that show the original interiors of the HSTs, Jimmy Saville et al:

And this one too, from just over three minutes in:

This is the original class 158 interior as I remember it:
http://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:West_Yorkshire_158906_interior.jpg

Admittedly the unit shown is a West Yorkshire PTE unit, but the only real difference I remember is that the trim on the edge of the luggage racks was blue instead of red on all the Regional Railways units (Including Scotrail), and perhaps the grab handles on the seat backs were too.

The Scotrail 150 seat covers were purple like the current Haymarket 158s and the BR Scotrail 158s were similar to that picture posted but the seats were 2 tone blue spots instead of red/blue and first class was just plain bright red with wood effect tables.

One picture I'd like to see is the old cross country 158s interior

Loads on flickr.com, for the UK and all over the world. I have posted many myself, including the UK, Europe and former Soviet countries.

Search on train interiors.

The red seats in ScotRail class 158 first class was a shadow franchise (post 1994) thing.

They originally had the usual grey/blue Regional Railways fabric but with a apple/emerald green replacing the light blue part. There was also white anti-massacrers with "ScotRail" in the Regional Railways typeface embroidered on them (I still have one that I "acquired" somewhere in the loft).

I think at least one of the Ex ScotRail Mk2's in store at Tyseley has the same fabric.

But has anyone go any First Scotrail class 150 inteiror shots ?

One of the Scottish 150s finished up with Arriva Trains Northern, who then passed all their 150s to Northern Rail in the same condition they had received them from Scotland and South Wales, so searching for ATN and Northern 150 interiors might bring up what you are looking for.

302-7 and 309 s had deep sprung seats
the 302s on the fenchurch seemed to bob passengers up and down..I guess it was the standard of the track
before refurb of course

The origonal emu,s on Liverpool St services were very comfortable and had a nickname of Swingers as looking down the coach you could see the unit moving side to side.

150228 and 150245 transferred from Scotrail to Arriva Trains Northern, but had the Regional Railways style grey with blue spots. 150245 then transferred to Anglia Railways and then ATW, whilst 150228 is a Northern unit now with Northern seat covers.

I think that was the 306s.

Indeed; none of the 150s that remained with Scotrail into First Scotrail days, prior to reallocation in 2005, passed to Northern. 150228 and 245 moved to ATN at an earlier date. Mind you, other than what shedman has said, I don't think that the interiors of the Scotrail 150s will have been much different from the original Regional Railways 3+2 layout, as is still to be found in ex-London Midland units, and the ten 150/2s that moved to Northern from Valley Lines?

Would they have been much changed from the standard Regional Railways scheme and layout? I didn't think that they were, beyond the addition of the first class compartment.

From what I can remember the 158s had cream seats with like a blue and red triangle shape in standard class. 158750 which moved to FNW then FTPE still had the XC first class compartment but the STD seats were changed to TPE ones

Cream seats, that's an interesting one.

158750 can't have spent long with FNW (A quick Google search confirms this to be true), it was in use with Arriva Trains Northern on Transpennine workings from early 2003, before being absorbed into the new First TPE franchise in February 2004.

After much searching I found a dreadful picture of the XC 158 interior. Sadly because of the low quality picture the seats just look red!! Click here

Perhaps because a 158 with 1st is actually a 159?

A 159 is a NSE spec 3 car 158... SWT's 2006 conversions were more renumbering for convenience..

IIRC Scotrail were the only RR 158s to get 1st class from new for EDI-GLA (those are probably IATA codes but who cares - you know what I mean!), TPE, VXC and SWT were later retrofits.

Standard class retained RR seat covers and first class had former NSE first class patterned covers, the purple with (I think) blue diagonal lines

Thanks
Were the first class seats the same as those used in standard with just a different seat trim or actutal first class seats similar to those in a nse 159 etc

Exactly the same. No extra padding like the former TPE 158s had. IIRC it was a compartment of 20 seats (2 tables and the rest airline) with the tables being the same as standard class too. No table/reading lamps.

For me "Old Train Interiors" provokes memories of 6 aside, horsehair seating, no corridors, faded pictures of railway-served resorts between the seatbacks and luggage racks, and a strap to open and close the window.

Nurse - the curtains!!

The old TPE 158's that previously had 1st were definately 158's, not 159's.

I can vouch for this.

I remember when TPE began to receive 185s, Central trains aquired some ex TPE 2 & 3xcar 158s, and placed them straight into service, still with red livery and 1st class sections.

The first class was declassified, but not a lot of people knew that, and I enjoyed several journeys from Manchester to Nottingham and Grantham to Heckington in hitherto unknown comfort.

Same as when Central had ex MML 170s, I often used to enjoy half the centre coach to myself in a large reclining chair (the single side, of course) twixt Cardiff and Nottingham because everyone assumed they'd be charged more for the pleasure. Of course, the guards typically said nothing! It was all the more useful if I was trying to leave Birmingham at a busy time as that section only filled up when people began to believe they were alright in first as the rest of the train was too rammed for a guard to come past and tell them off

Bit more info RE ScotRail 158..

158 701-750 had First Class sections fitted. Some most from new but the earlier ones had it retrofitted.

The First Class seats had larger spacing and were finished in the same grey with blue/green RR style flecks as I think, the 150's that had been refurbished for Centro used.. If I recall right, the later built units had fake wood effect grey tables also (although they may have been fitted at the same time as the red cloth)

Around 1993/4 the first class seats were re-trimmed in the same red fabric used on the 159's then being fitted out at Rosyth Dockyard.

The info comes from RND Rosyth.. Forgot to ask my Uncle, who worked on them at Rosyth, until tonight.. He also retro fitted some units with the new seats at Haymarket and he said in Glasgow, however this could have been Cowlairs or Springburn.. "It was in that kip" so couldn't get him to narrow it down..(its amazing what a chat over a pint or 5 can bring up!).

Around this time 158 745-50 were transferred to what would become Cross Country to work the Edinburgh - Manchester Airport service (the rail-link having then just opened). When they lost the ScotRail interior I don't know.

There were 2 units (think 158 714/5) re-trimmed in second class around 1996/7 in a blue cloth with red/orange checks a-la RR style but to match the colours of the ScotRail "swoosh" then being used..

I have a pic of the fabric used somewhere (From a 150) and will post as soon as I find it..

All this comes from what I already knew, My Uncle, And "Railway Steve" of Scotrail (and my once local pub)..

Hope it helps!

As for what units Had 1st from new.. I found a pic of 158 434 in all standard (no yellow stripe) in nov 1991.. Driver training at York!

Does anyone have a pic of the ScotRail logo on 158701/2 when new? I remember it was in the BR typeface as opposed to the RR one.. It would have carried it for months if that..

The Mk3s used in HSTs and on the WCML had a second interior which was introduced during the Swallow era in the late 80s early 90s before they passed into private hands.

Std class had the IC70 seats with the GRP back in cream, the moquette was orange and the side panels off white. The saloon ends had three diagonal orange stripes either side of the luggage rack area.

First class had a pink moquette with wing back seats.

I don't have any pictures of either but they must be around somewhere.
