Old track plans.

Hey folks, like we have quail maps now that detail the track layout do anyone know if there was anything like them that predates the first edition (around 1994 I think). I'm a bit of an infrastructure geek and have often pondered what used to be there on my journeys (especially on the still remaing bit of the wood head around guide bridge). I've looked through old photos where possible but it's always nice to have a track layout to make things make sense!

Cooke has done most of the GWR and quite a lot of the Southern, in considerable detail.

1994? 1974 more like for the first edition of a Quail map

Where can they be found? I've got the last three editions, I have wrongly assumed the oldest of which was the first.

Oldest Quail I have dates back to ~1988; which one was produced in 1974?

The first of the familiar British Rail Track Diagrams books was published by the Quail Map Company in May 1987. They had however produced other sorts of rail-related maps before then.

I recently rescued a very large amount of old railway documents (legally) lost and forgotten for years in a garden shed. Many had perished alas but many hundreds have been saved. The docs include a large number of track plans including a full track, signal and gradient set of the LSWR system from London down to Cornwall (probably done around WW1). I would post a few pics here to illustrate the style but not sure best way to do it. The Signalling Record Society used to publish British Railways Layout Plans of the 1950's from the John Swift Collection. Whilst not being so 'professionally' produced as Quail, they are nevertheless very detailed and well worth having if you can find them. Examples of the titles are seen at

The North Eastern Railway Association produce a number of Line Diagrams for the NER area of the UK some of these date back to around 1912.
