I agree with OT on many things, and disagree with him on just as many.
But he always backs up his points with reasoning and facts, instead of resorting to insults or lies.

Certainly. OT is a fountain of knowledge, which I will never have.

While him and I may disagree on political points, as I remember him saying on another forum he never makes a point without evidence.

While I don't doubt that Old Timer (aka "Tory Boy") possesses a wealth of experience and is knowledgeable in certain areas of the railway, he is somewhat prone to spouting a lot of guff with regards to subject areas he knows little about, as though he wants to give the impression of knowing everything about everything. I recall reading on another forum his descriptions of various methods of signalling single line railways and it was utter, utter, garbage, so beware.

P.S. His politics stink too.

I very much doubt that. I know a little of his history - including a background in signalling. OT is a solid chap and certainly wouldn't say anything if he didn't know it to be correct.

Nothing secretive about it, anyone is still free to sign up if they want whenever they want. The reason I imagine it was changed to a required log in was to minimise the risk of management freely browsing the site snooping on members.

As for OT, Im aware he's done the rounds and probably has a hell of alot of experience to share but that doesn't mean he is ALWAYS correct on EVERYTHING....and I'm sure he would never claim otherwise.

Nobody has said that - just that he would not post anything (to do with railway operations - politics are opinions) if he did not know it to be correct.

And you really dont have a clue do you, how old are you, how long have you worked on the railways and in what capacity?
What exactly did he say on railchat or whatever its called?

I'm glad to see OT is back to make a few valid posts, I enjoy hearing of his stories of a time long gone and he is very helpful too (still owe him for the class 70 gen when I managed to see my first one)

To the chap who said he spouts on about stuff he knows nothing about, how do you know what he does and doesn't know or are you one of those "it's on wikipedia so it's true and everyone else is wrong" or a "i said it's true so it must be" people?

If you don't like what he posts then block his posts in your settings don't go complaining to those of us who enjoy his posts

Isn't it weird that he was away for so long, yet this was only posted on the day he made his posting return. What a weird coincidence...!

I agree with the majority of people here, I was very glad to see OT back as he's got a thorough knowledge of railway infrastructure & BR history, and he often posts interesting stuff. Maybe he is a little bit strong on the anti-Labour stuff, but I wouldn't hold that against him.

Me and Old Timer do not always see eye to eye, but what i like about his postings is the passion and thought that goes into them. Although we are from different political spectrums we have one aim and that is for the rail industry to be succesful. We probably differ on how we get there but for both of us it is the goal.

If this is the Old Timer that use to post on another forum (for railstaff, his postings have sadly been lost on their) we share the love that was the Crompton Parkinson 12LDA28-B aka the class 45 peaks.

I am glad to see he is indeed back and making up for lost time, perhaps our swords will cross soon at some point. It is not personnal but passionate.

As you rightly say we have exchanged frank and full views, but I admire and respect you as a person, and would buy you a drink without hesitation. Differences of view should really not become personal or vindictive. I dont think thye ever have in our case, although we have sometimes oput our points across in a forthright manner as I recall ! We come here to enjoy ourselves.

I saw this thread and thought I'd pitch in with my thoughts;

I've not had many (if any) direct dealings with OT but I have seen him around and do like to have a read about what he is saying on a topic, he is extremely full of knowledge and definitely worth listening too.

If RailUK ever did an honours system, OT should definitely be at the top of the list!

By the way some short while back I spotted an RM working a bus route near St Pauls.

That would be a Heritage Route 15, which run from Trafalgar Square to the Tower of London. They run during the daytime every day (think they come off around 6 or 7), and operate as a normal service (Travelcards and Oysters valid), slipping in between the low floor double deckers on the normal 15. There is a 9 too which runs the opposite way from Aldwych to the Royal Albert Hall. Services are normally operated by refurbished and re-engined Routemasters (nicknamed Dartmasters due to using the same engines and gearboxes as the incredibly common Dennis Dart) but occasionally there are special workings with other Routemasters or other heritage buses.

I prefer non-electrified (because that's all that I have known)! There ain't nothing to take you by surprise there!

Though, overall, I think I prefer OHLE. You can't easily grab it accidentally or step on it.
