More for curiosity rather than anything useful, but is there any document / resource (even if only in print rather than online, though of course the latter is preferable) that provides more specific dates regarding the introduction dates on rolling stock from before the days of forum threads with the info posted? Wouldn't necessarily need to be exact to the day but something more specific than, for example '1989-1992' or '2003-2005'. I've noticed a couple of wikipedia articles cite such publications as source material, so wondered how much is out there...

Capital Transport to some pretty detailed books if Southern Region EMU's and DEMU's are your thing.

"The Allocation History of BR Diesels and Electrics", compiled by Roger Harris, gives the actual release from works and in service dates for every single diesel and electric locomotive built for service in the UK, and has subsequently moved on to chronicle similar information for individual DMU vehicles.

Ashley Butlin's books are probably the best for EMU/DMU build dates. Without looking at my copies I believe that they cover units from 50s to around 2005.
