Old signalling equipment by platform 24 at Waterloo?

Anyone know the history of the collection of old signalling and point equipment next to platform 24 in Waterloo?

Was it an area for S&T testing?

I'm pretty sure you're right. IIRC before the Waterloo Area Re-signalling Scheme, Waterloo was controlled by a mini lever box at the throat. At some point between the abolition of that box and the commissioning of the Wimbledon ASC a temporary relay room/panel was in work. I think that's the brick building with the black sloping roof in one of the photos. Once the temporary panel was redundant I think it was used as a training school, and the outside stuff in the pictures would have been brought in to augment that facility. At some point it was the S&T depot too.

I don't think so. No normal sized kit fitted down there (especially not with junction indicators 1 & 4 on it ). Also you would never be able to get it that clean again once it had been in that grubby hole!

Looks like it to me as well. Two things that are typical of a training facility is the placement of signals and other S&T equipment in positions that are far too close to the tracks. And incomplete point layouts (so save space/cost).

Reuse of otherwise redundant equipment is also typical. Although some new equipment may be used as well.

I would guess training as well. We're currently trying to set up a bit of a training environment of our own, although we're much more limited for space and resources. It's very useful to be able to freely pull something apart at your own pace, or be able to set up scenarios for new starters/apprentices.

Training area does make sense. Don't think it has much (any?) use anymore judging by the tree growth!
