Old Railway Bench

Hi

I must confess I know very little about trains or railway items, so I was hoping someone on here could help

We recently moved into a new house and we have uncovered an old railway bench when clearing out the garden

Just wondered if anyone knew anything about this one, is it anything special? Any idea if it is a proper railway bench (if that even is a thing!), Or is it just a remake probably from a garden centre?

It’s my aim to restore it and have it as a nice seating area when the garden is finally finished.

Any info you could give would be great

why do you think its a railway bench?
It could equally well be a bus shelter or park or other corporation/council bench

Most railway station benches had legs of considerably greater strength - often cast iron - and had holes through the feet so they could be bolted down to prevent them being stolen or thrown on the railway line, so I think your bench is probably 'in the style of' rather than being a railway company bench. Had a look on the back or underside of the seat to see if there's a makers name on it?

it could be ex railway .the paint would indicate a Southern origin.

the desirable pre grouping benches usually had the company monogram cast in the end brackets .
the Southern liked to keep things simple witness the pre fabricated concrete bridges they were fond of
google southern railway stations and see if you can find one similar . that looks like a nice piece of timber

The gardener who helped out suggested it was an old railway bench. Like you said, it could be any of those though

Yeah think it will look nice once it’s all refurbed. The back part has a bit of rot on the Bach, but other than that it’s not in too bad condition
