Does anyone know where I can find the cost of rail tickets many years ago? Specifically, I'm after the cost of a third class single from Hartlepool to Sunderland in 1919 or thereabouts. Thanks.

Cannot answer exactly at present, but almost all single fares were based on mileage. Was about 1.5d (old pennies) per mile in mid 1950s, so probably a bit less than that in 1919.

Thanks, that's very helpful. I've found an NER ticket from Sunderland to Durham which cost 1s 3d, and Hartlepool is a little further so I'm guessing it might have been around 1s 6d. But I'd be grateful if anyone could shed any further light.

As the routes to Durham were 14 3/4 and 15 miles that means the fare was still 1d/mile. Hartlepool is 18 miles by the present route (21 by the one-time inland alternative), so 1s 6d is spot on.
