Hello

I worked at Old Oak Common for a short time in 1987. At that time I was lodging in Stonebridge. However I was given the opportunity to move into the hostel near the depot, if I remember correctly the rent was £25/week, whereas I was paying £40/week for a room in Stonebridge. My shift supervisor - known as 'Wiggy' contacted the relevant British Rail department to put my name forward.

Some of the lads reckoned it had a 'bad reputation' and I should not take up lodging there. Never did move in as I relocated back to the North East. A letter came for me after leaving British Rail stating I had been accepted for accommodation within the hostel.

If I was still at Old Oak Common when offered the accommodation I may have stayed on with British Rail.

Basically I am curious to know more about the hostel - What was the 'bad reputation'? If my memory serves be correctly there was a railway social club there as well? I understand the whole area is undergoing huge regeneration at the moment and the hostel is ear marked for demolition.
