Wouldn't that area have been covered by CSR (cab secure radio) rather than NRN?

Well before CSR I believe it was NRN and I need to try and find it as its one of my pop quiz type questions on a "the trainers set some questions for you all to try and find out" so I know there definitely WAS an area number for Radlett I just cant find it lol

All the Sectional Appendices are current, I cant find old ones, and I cant find old signaler Modules either :(

I think before decommissioning NRN had pretty much nationwide (often not that great) coverage on the railway irrespective of what other additional networks were also available in certain areas,

According to a 2007 Sectional Appendix, area 066 covered from St Pancras to Sharnbrook Tunnel.

Thameslink units had CSR, but I doubt freight locos did (they would have to have NRN for other parts of the network), not sure about the 'Intercity' stock.

Yeah, that sounds right.

CSR and NRN would of run in parallel, GSMR replaced NRN first and they are now letting the CSR network slowly wind down. Certainly in my area no trains now operate with CSR because London Bridge low level and the Coastway East are CSR exclusive, we still have dual fitted class 378 on the LOROLs but for how long I don't know. In all the years we had an operating NRN I think I only used it once and that was an incoming call from a voyager and even then the driver had to remind me he was on a radio, was so used to how CSR worked that I didn't even think about one way conversations.

Funnily enough the 91 I drove earlier still had the NRN fitted and was receiving a signal. The codes for the ECML are/were
023 Kings Cross-Peascliffe Tunnel
031 Peascliffe Tunnel-Church Fenton
069 Church Fenton-Aycliffe
093 Aycliffe to somewhere past Newcastle

NRN was indeed designed for national, railway based coverage, alongside a overlapping emergency radio network. It was in Band 3 around 200Mhz

The NRN was a trunked radio system with each basestation allowing a single conversation at any time, the overlapping emergency system 'listened' for emergency calls and immediately cancelled any ongoing conversations when an emergency call was heard.
From a NRN handset you could dial any BR extension phone, and there were specific dialling codes for ECR's etc if I recall correctly. As the network used telephone extensions and standard PABX routing there were rules against Drivers using the network for calls that could (or should) be made from an SPT.

The RETB systems used the same basestations with a different control set up.

CSR was developed primarily for DOO, and was designed to be secure and also to route the call to the appropriate signaller for the area, hence it could be used by drivers instead of an SPT. I dont recall the CSR system allowed any calls to the BR telephone system unless the signaller re-routed the call.

All CSR radio conversations were recorded, it was only in the last few years of NRN that those conversations were also recorded.

I travelled on many units in the NSE testing CSR and I cant remember seeing any dual equipped NRN / CSR units.

I'm going back 20 odd years now, so happy to be corrected by those with better memories.....

Class 150/1 sets formally with London Overground on the Gospel Oak - Barking line were fitted with both headsets. SWT Class 158/159 sets were also fitted with both systems, and had a changeover switch in the cab.

NRN radios are still used frequently in Scotland. Not every unit has an operational GSMR. Mainly 170s and 158s which I'm told will retain the NRNs as GSMR will not cover every area in Scotland.

Dunbar- Edinburgh - Addiewell -Polmont - Leuchars - 068

Addiewell - Polmont - glasgow and beyond 092

Leuchars - perth - dundee - Aberdeen 094

LM class 350/1 and /2 were fitted with both NRN and CSR. Both are being replaced with GSMR - units fitted with GSMR have had both earlier systems removed.

Sort of. They arnt wired in anymore-the nrn has no power and the changeover switch does nothing. Have driven plenty of 321s with the switch set to nrn but with a functioning CSR.

NRN is still in use.

TPE Class 185s do not yet have GSMR fitted, although the fitting has now only just started with I think 1 or 2 units fitted so far.

TPE Class 170s have GSMR fitted but not switched on as staff have not yet been trained in its use.

Still have them on the freight side, everywhere I go has GSM-R but I suppose there are areas we go without it. I've noticed some drivers don't bother putting the area codes in any more but it sure still works. Think ATW have only recently fitted their fleet with GSM-R?

Its on all our units now, and nrn has been removed. Gsmr couldn't be installed on 175s until all crew who signed them (every depot except Machynlleth, Pwllheli and in the Cardiff valleys) were trained up as there was no space for it without removing nrn first. It was fitted on the 158's years ago though as it is a requirement for ERTMS used on the cambrian.

If we don't change the channel on the NRN when passing the lineside signs for them it bleeps eventually to remind you, several miles down the line usually...!

I know if we forgot to change the NRN code on the up road on the ECML just north of Grantham from 031 to 023 we would get all the way to Sandy/Biggleswade before it would it bleep to tell us we're out of range.
