Old Cab View Videos

This is an extreme long shot that someone might recognise these. A good few years ago I watch about 2 or 3 videos of cab rides. They were all routes around London and were all filmed before any Connex or SWT livery (even the SWT "variant") ever appeared. There wasn't any commentary, just the conversations the person had with the drivers. Only route that I can remember is Chessington South-Waterloo.

Does anyone recognise them and remember who the publisher was?

Might have possibly tracked down the name of the series, might be part of a series called "Cab Views", if it is I've probably got very little chance of finding any as it appears that they're really rare.

Railscene did make an offer when they were moving over from video to dvd that anyone who had purchased one of these could return it to them for a small fee and they would send a dvd replacement.

I never did take them up on this offer and a quick scan of my selection of old cab ride videos reveals that I have five original Railscene videos that I bought direct from them:-
No 4.....Exeter to Plymouth
No 5.....Euston to Liverpool
No 13...Crewe to Holyhead
No 39...Manchester to Barrow
No 54...Manchester to Sheffield

I think these titles were purchased by a company called Kingfisher. Their site is easily found with a quick Google.

The Ian Allan store in Birmingham stocked most/all of these DVD titles last time I visited, too.

Although marketed as 'no commentary', some of the cab conversations are extremely informative, although the audio is imperfect. Euston - Liverpool Lime Street is particularly good.

Some of the cab chat would fall foul of today's high standards around equality and diversity etc....

Of course, camera technology has moved on a long way, since this series was filmed.

Indeed. Waterloo - Exeter cab ride in a 50, with very non-PC comments being made such as "I think this route should have been the mainline to Exeter". Later, as the train approaches Exmouth Junction, the driver makes plenty of comments about the rubbish Western region lower quadrant signals.

That's not non-PC. it's an opinion.

Been watching another one in the series and some of the chat between the driver and the person filming it seemed familiar. Does anyone know how many videos were made? I know that at least 13 were released

I would second that some of what the traction inspectors (and drivers) say is very highly informative.

The Merseyrail, Cambrian and Whitby cab rides in particular. *Very* knowledgeable traction inspectors - sadly a breed rarely seen today.
