OHL down between Morcambe jn and Carnforth.

Up rd blocked, down still open, single line working a possibility. Expect delays, cancellations an alterations.

Looks like all trains are cancelled. Lot of angry passengers - services are likely to be busier as there was engineering work yesterday so people will have put off travel today. People waiting for coaches in subzero temps, not ideal.

Friend is at Carlisle, been told to expect bustitution, been there since about 1930 and not yet on their way so i guess they are trying to source some form of busses. Carlisle can be a rather bleak when in the cold or wet.

Sleepers might take a hit as well, its ironic this should happen as they were meant to be going via ECML tonight and tomorrow but this diversion was cancelled as the engineering works schedule was amended.

I can tell you the the sleepers will not go via the S and C, nor will they go via the Cambrian Coast.

That was indeed the Little North Western.
But I've heard the title sometimes [wrongly] used for the Clapham-Wennington-Carnforth line.
But with a very nasty sharp bend entering Carnforth and a reversal there to boot, I reckon its a pretty safe bet the beds won't be going that way, either.

They seem to have been kicking people off trains on the promise of buses which haven't (unsurprisingly) materialised in sub zero temps. Surely even if they had to queue and send through in convoy it should be possible to get 2VTWC, 1TPE and the Barrow train (is that northern or tpe) per hour through on the open line. There are going to be a lot of cold people in the wrong place tonight.

On Twitter Virgin are refusing hotel reimbursement. Surely that is against the terms of carriage in these circumstances?

They probably don't have much choice. And even then, they will have a large taxi bill for missed onward connections.

According to twitter sleeper was to be held at Euston and Glasgow/Edinburgh to sleep on with passengers taking the early West/East coast trains in the morning but have since changed this and are now running. Must be confident of it being resolved now.

No, the Little North Western does include Skipton to Wennington, the remainder to Carnforth being a joint line.

Still not much chance of WCML diversions using it though.

I hope its sorted by Saturday.

The question to ask is"How are the passengers getting to Preston"?.....Need to be provided with buses/coaches from Oxenholme?....Presume starting from Preston as I think there is no crossover at Lancaster ,so unable to reverse a pendilino ?..Obviously not a problem at Preston.

You have forgot normal diversion route via Blackburn,Hellifield and S&C..Signal box opening on S&C tonight I think would preclude it

Pedantically.... actually Lancaster green Ayre to Skipton, also mostly closed.. The little NW never reached Low Gill, it stopped at Ingleton and the big LNWR filled in the gap

Once a 2+ hour delay passes midnight, hotel accommodation should be compulsory. It is not acceptable to expect passengers to wait at Carlisle from 6:30pm until the wee hours before catching a coach down the M6 to Preston, then a 1am train to Euston arriving around 4am! All this on the "coldest night of the year", according to the Met Office. You get the feeling that in these circumstances Virgin couldn't orchestrate worse customer relations and PR if they tried.

They are both shown as 1T87 so I think only one train was planned to operate, presumably the 0001 departure ended up being too early for the connecting passengers so was effectively retimed to 0101.
