Oh dear...misleading publicity from Chiltern!

Chiltern appear to have just posted an advert on Facebook with the following:

This is your sign… the best plans are spontaneous and start with “let’s just stay on”

And a comment when someone asked:

Hi Sam, you will need to travel with a valid ticket, if you decide to extent your journey you can pay an excess fare or purchase a new single ticket

Oops! I wonder will they be kind to people who are issued Penalty Fares or prosecutions when they decide to "just stay on"? What a terrible piece of publicity for a Penalty Fares TOC.

Edited the text already....how bizarre. Wonder how my other half will feel if I "just stay on" one evening to explore the sights of Banbury ! Though isn't it that you can't be PF'd for over distance?

I think they meant to say "stay on for longer past your normal stop after already purchasing the correct ticket". But thats not really spontaneous if you've had to pre-purchase the ticket.

I get the initial idea of the advert, if you normally commute to a certain place, why not try going further and staying on longer for a weekend day out. But the wording was clumsy.

Reminds me of the latest LNER advert - anyone trying to make use of the 'freedom' they advertise will likely be met with a letter of prosecution in the mail (unless 'freedom' means a 70 minute period for ~£20 extra)

I certainly find that "freedom" ad very ironic given that they're in the business of removing it (unless you've got £200 odd spare).

Their definition of freedom is you can watch YouTube while travelling (on the correct booked service, of course).

You certainly can be PF'd for over distance. Or subjected to civil recovery or prosecuted. You haven't got a valid ticket for your whole journey.

The ones you classically couldn't were off-route or time restrictions. One of these has now been removed but I forget which one. In general though it is best to resolve any ticketing issue before boarding, or if done after boarding it absolutely must be resolved before you run out of validity on the ticket you hold (i.e. the last station stop allowing set-down at which the ticket held is valid, so you can leave there if you do fail to resolve it).

Unless you are in Merseyside who claim they can issue a penalty fare for using an off-peak ticket at peak times.
