Offshore Return (OSR)

Can anybody explain to me what an 'Offshore Return' is, and why one might want to buy it instead of an 'Off Peak Return'? Messing around in the new version of Avantix Traveller with the Railcard discount turned off, I notice this ticket type. It may have been in previous versions, I skipped buying NFM09.
For example, Blackpool South to Aberdeen via Carlisle has restriction 8A, and there is no mention of who prices it, whereas the Off Peak return has restriction 2U, another nominal restriction and is priced by Virgin Trains. No railcard discount seems to be available. It does seem that new ticket types seem to be springing up post 'simplification', and we may soon have lots more ticket types than we had before.

Not available between Aberdeen and Montrose. Available from Aberdeen and Montrose to most stations where an SVR is available. Where EC set the fare it seems to be typically the same price as the SVR. Where other operators set the fare it seems to typically be slightly more than the SVR.

You always know when the rigs have changed shift as quite a few of them miss their stop going south on the EC either through being tipsy or tired.

It is a fare type that pre-dates privatisation and was created by BR for oil-rig workers. Until and unless Scotrail decide they no longer want to sell them, it still sits in the system......

I imagine they still sell quite a few of them to people who may not otherwise use the train, hence they'll stay. They're not exactly over-publicised so it's likely the majority of people buying them know about it through the industry itself.

Anyone able to shed some light on what this type of ticket is, and where you source it on the avantix. Heard a couple of workmates discussing this the other night, one had been asked for one and didn't know how to access it on the machine. I haven't came across it yet, but for future reference, anyone know ?,

An open return valid to return within 2 months. Mainly for the benefit of oil rig workers, but no requirement to produce any documentation.

Selected flows from Aberdeen only. No railcards or other discount.

No Break of Journey on outward leg. Outward portion valid until 0430 the next morning like other products.

Ticket Type OSR (Offshore Return) with restriction 8A, (Any train).

Available to/from any station, so long as Aberdeen is either an origin or destination on the ticket.

We had this crop up very recently, so I have merged the threads (normally I'd link to the old thread but this isn't regarding a specific incident and about the tickets in general so I think a merge works best)

Where was the origin/destination of the ticket? We can look it up in Avantix.
