Off peak ticket question

On 6th March when Manchester United are playing in Wolverhampton myself an about half a dozen friends are planning on a mini-pub crawl along the line from Piccadilly to Wolves.

We plan to buy Off Peak return tickets, however, I am not 100% sure that using these tickets you can break your journey repeatedly.

Does anyone know what the score is if we all mob up with Off Peak tickets, then start alighting and re-joining the route at each station?

We are planning on taking 7 trains to get to Wolves and 4 to get back.

Going down via Stoke an back via Crewe.

If Off Peak tickets are not the right ones to have under such circumstances what tickets are?

These are the full restrictions of a Manchester to Wolverhampton ticket, there is nothing I can see to prevent break of journey on the outward portion. Break of journey is always permitted with the return portion of an Off Peak ticket.

However it will be cheaper for you to split the ticket, and also less 'suspicious' if you end up with 7 stamps on the ticket!

Splitting at places like Stoke or Stafford (depending on the route your trains take) in particular can help bring the price down.

If you go a different route back it's not so easy.

If you can provide details of the route, and calling stations, that your trains will take, that will help us to give you a price list of Off Peak Day tickets.

The itinerary you have posted is perfectly valid with a £25 Manchester - Wolverhampton Off-Peak return.

The cost can be reduced to £23.70 by buying 3 tickets instead.

Manchester - Stockport Off-Peak Day Return route Any Permitted £2.60
Stockport - Stafford Off-Peak Day Return £14.50
Stafford - Wolverhampton Off-Peak Day Return £6.60
Total £23.70

The additional restrictions these three tickets carry are that they are valid for one day only and that your trains must stop at Stockport and Stafford where you move from using one ticket to another. That isn't a problem with the trains in your itinerary.

XC are not part if Groupsave, and have a specific type of ticket called OFF-PEAK MINI GROUP for 3 or 4 people. These need to be booked the day before travel. Because these are booked like an advance fare, you're allocated a specific service, so obviously break of journey is not permitted.

Yes, but the OP says 'me and about half a dozen' so that's seven, which can split in to 3 and 4. But it wouldn't be valid on XC, there's no restriction on groupsave tickets for break of journey, so if you bought two sets of groupsaves between Wolves and Manchester (not sure where to split) you could travel with LM/EMT etc and be valid.

A ticket isn't limited by TOC unless it is printed on the ticket but GroupSave is not available on flows set by TOCs who do not participate.

XC do not participate in GroupSave. Where they set the fare, EM offer GroupSave Off-Peak Day Returns and NT have their own Northern Duo tickets. But neither set the fares here. So the best bet for GroupSave is LM.

This page confirms that LM do participate in GroupSave. Tickets are available at stations only. The best bet would be to buy the Manchester - Stockport and Stockport - Stafford tickets in advance or at Manchester, then buy an appropriate number of GroupSave tickets to Wolverhampton on arrival at Stafford station. 3 or 4 adults should be able to get GroupSave Stafford - Wolverhampton Off-Peak Day Returns for £13.20.

Given the small price difference, added to the likelyhood of being somewhat alcoholed up on the way back, to keep things as simple as possible I think I will stick to the Off Peak returns as they fit the bill and make it simple for when we cannot remember where we are let alone which ticket we need.

A group of 4 efectivly travles half price, personaly I wouldn't call that a small difrence.

But fair enouth more choice and quicker trains with an off-peak return.
