Hi there.

Say I buy an off-peak return ticket from Glasgow Central to Paisley Gilmour Street around 10am, will this ticket be valid if I come back at 5pm (on a weekday)?

Thanks a lot!

Thanks for the answer, however I keep on getting different responses to this. I asked a ticket guy yesterday and he said a definate "NO. You can only come back at 5pm, and not have to buy another ticket, on weekends". You'd have to buy another ticket". A few days before that, one said "YES, it is valid".

If you have trouble, ask the guard to look up the restriction code. Additionally, even if there were afternoon peak restrictions, you would have to pay an excess to the Anytime fare, NOT buy a new ticket.

Even the common ScotRail restriction on off-peak day singles and returns (H1) only bars evening travel for joining trains at [stn]EDB[/stn], [stn]HYM[/stn], [stn]GLC[/stn], and [stn]GLQ[/stn] (between 1642 and 1809, plus probably the 1755 EDB-GLC, although the restriction text refers to a 1756 departure so I suspect it was retimed at some point.

Your fine to return that time of the evening as far as i know PYG is in the Strathclyde area which has NO evening restrictions any day of the week. Perhaps another member of the forum that works in the area can confirm???

Carter Usm do you know?

This is the EXACT RESTRICTION:

Restriction : B3
OUTWARD TRAVEL
By any train except those
timed to depart Mondays to
Fridays before 0900

RETURN TRAVEL
By any train

Return whenever you want to!!! Any problems get an UPFN and we will advise.

Where did you ask this ticket guy, Glasgow or Edinburgh?
A return that only allows you to return at 5pm, or after 5pm?
As above, this has been a long standing restriction for travelling between Glasgow and Edinburgh, otherwise offpeak are valid after 9am (and any time at weekends)

But only on tickets from Glasgow <> Edinburgh and some nearby stations (e.g. Newcraighall) and intermediate stations (e.g Croy) but not longer tickets that include validity between Glasgow & Edinburgh. If in doubt, the restriction code should be checked.

Exactly, since when were Paisley or Glasgow between Glasgow or Edinburgh!
However, there are many tickets beyond Glasgow where the restriction applies and this used to include Paisley and any Off Peak Returns from Edinburgh
Personally, it sounds like the member of staff asked was from Edinburgh or in the Edinburgh area, or the actual travel points were not clarified

It also used to be able to get round the restriction by travelling via Motherwell instead of Falkirk High, useful if travelling via Glasgow Central anyway
I used do this with a Cathcart - Edinburgh (formerly Cheap Day Return) ticket and was able travel back on any service via Motherwell
At that time the same restriction used to also apply to Barrhead and Paisley
