hello, I would like to get an off peak return Nottingham to Oban and break the outward journey in Edinburgh. ie leaving Nottingham in the afternoon (too late to arrive in Oban the same day) and then leave Edinburgh at 07.15am. Is this allowed with an off peak return ticket, even though the 7.15 Edinburgh to Glasgow train is peak time?
On journey planner, I cant get it to show the exact combination I wish to take but I can find an option which is breaking the journey in Newcastle and includes 08.30 Edinburgh to queen street service which would also be a peak time train.
(0643 Newcastle - 0809 Edinburgh, 08.30 Edinburgh - 0916 Glasgow Queen street)

The wording on the ticket break of journey restrictions:
Unless otherwise indicated in the relevant restriction code, time restrictions apply as from the initial origin station on both days.

Would appreciate any guidance on whether the option I want to do is allowed and what the restrictions actually mean!

That ticket restriction is 2T which is effectively unrestricted. Valid at any time after 0415 every day.

There is no such thing as a “peak time train”!

The restriction, if any, is determined by the ticket you hold, not the train you travel on.

That said, an off-peak return is only valid outbound for one day, it’s the return that is valid for a month.

So see https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/ticket-types/tickets/bfr/

Day Of Travel

Off-Peak Return tickets are valid for outward travel on the date shown on the ticket and until 04:29 the following morning.
If you cannot complete your journey on the same day you will be allowed to finish it the following day - see 'Break of journey' below.

Time Of Travel

The National Rail Journey Planner will automatically work out which tickets are valid for your journey.
The times when you may use your Off-Peak ticket are indicated by a Restriction Code applicable to the journey you are making. This can be viewed by clicking the link from the Journey Planner ticket terms and conditions page once you have made your selection.
The Restriction Code is a two character (alpha-numeric) code. This is shown on most tickets and the meaning can be found by going to www.nationalrail.co.uk/XX [where 'XX' is the two character code].
You will also be advised of the restriction when buying your ticket.

Break Of Journey

Break of journey is permitted unless otherwise indicated by a restriction shown against the ticket's Restriction Code.
Overnight break of journey - if the journey cannot be completed on the same day, the ticket may be used to continue the journey on the following day.
Unless otherwise indicated in the relevant restriction code, time restrictions apply as from the initial origin station on both days.
The appropriate restrictions for the actual day on which travel is being undertaken apply (for example, it may be that if day 1 is on Sunday, no restrictions apply, but on day 2, the Monday-Friday restrictions apply). All travel must be completed by 04:29 in the morning after this second day.
These provisions will allow you to break your journey in Edinburgh outbound as you wish.

Got it thank you. I am using a two together railcard so although there is no standard return ticket nottingham - oban, if I choose a service leaving nottingham in the early morning I cannot get the railcard discount

Railcard isn't valid before 0930 Monday to Friday unfortunately.

Exactly.
The 07:15 M-F from Edinburgh is not valid for tickets using the Two Together Railcard. That’s an extra complication you introduced just now! Unless you start on a Friday, of course.

@jfollows is mostly correct, although the Two Together Railcard (rather than the ticket itself) introduces an additional restriction in that you can't start travel before 09:30 Mon-Fri.

However I would add that overnight break of journey is permitted on the outward portion of an Off-Peak Return in the circumstances described in these extracts from the quote @jfollows gave:
If you cannot complete your journey on the same day you will be allowed to finish it the following day - see 'Break of journey' below.

Overnight break of journey - if the journey cannot be completed on the same day, the ticket may be used to continue the journey on the following day.

Given that a Two Together Railcard discounted ticket isn't valid until 09:30, and that this journey is so long it can't be finished in one day if started after 09:30, I don't think there would be any difficulty in establishing that an overnight break of journey is permitted here.

Travel would be allowed from 09:30 (due to the Railcard time restriction) on each day.
