Off Peak Edinburgh

I have a ticket off peak return 'not via London' from Oxford to edinburgh, out on 30/10, back on 1/11. If I want instead to return on the evening of 31/10 via London, can this be done via an excess and, if so, how?

Yes, half the difference between what you paid and the fare that allows you to do what you want, which is the Super Off Peak Return route +ANY PERMITTED at £177.60, assuming the time restrictions suit. You may however have to try a few ticket offices to get it issued correctly; some may claim you can't go Off Peak to Super Off Peak, but in reality they are the equivalent tickets - the ECML Off Peaks are the former Business Saver, unlike most other TOCs where the Off Peak is the former Saver.

If the validity of that ticket *doesn't* suit the Off Peak is a hefty £292.80, so you may wish to have a look to see if you can beat half the difference (£64.55) with a cheap Advance.

Have known some ticket offices try to charge the full difference on a Change of Route excess, even though you'd be on the different route on the return leg only.

Yep, I've found that a common problem, though always got it back on complaining to the TOC.

Thanks for the speedy reply, so, given I have an off peak 'not via' which cost £163.70 so the excess should be about a fiver but it might be hard work to get one sold?

Yep correct.

If you’re unable to obtain it before travel, the excess can also be paid aboard the train with no penalty or, failing that, at an intermediate ticket office eg KGX.
