Off-peak cross London transfer

Hi all,
If I have an off-peak(/super off-peak) ticket that is valid during what London Underground consider to be the peak time, with a Maltese cross, will I be allowed to use it on the underground? Will it work the ticket barriers?

Thankfully London Underground won't be interested in the peak/off-peak validity of your ticket; only "does it have a Maltese cross?". If yes, then the barriers will allow you through. If no, they won't.

Yes. Peak/off-peak times are actually based on the ticket held, not the operator. For example, even looking at just Oyster on London Underground there're differences in peak times between one-day caps and single pay-as-you-go fares. So provided you travel when your specific ticket is supposed to be valid, you'll be absolutely fine.

(It's probably actually the case that it's physically possible to use the cross-London portion of your ticket at any time on London Underground, but the legality of doing that could be questionable so I wouldn't.)

Actually, it is possible for LU barriers to enforce a limited number of Off-Peak restrictions. The relevant data forms part of the encoding on the LU part of the magstripe and appears in the "Ticket Types" file in the Fares Download.

A quick look at the file suggests that only two codes are currently used:

• 0 : No restriction
• 1 : Not valid before 0930 Mondays to Fridays, excluding public holidays

• 1 : Not valid before 0930 Mondays to Fridays, excluding public holidays

Used for One Day Travelcards no doubt - and therefore not relevant to the OP's situation.

There are in fact four codes that can be used, all of which advise the earliest time that the ticket can be used on Mondays - Fridays
0 - No restriction
1 - 0930
2 - 0900
4 - 1000

No other time restrictions are available in the LUL section.
