Hi,

I'm traveling from Apsley to Stockport on Monday afternoon leaving around 1740. I had understood that an off peak ticket wouldn't be valid, restriction 9I, due to the evening peak on trains out of Euston.

However NRE seems to be showing off-peak single available on any afternoon train.

Can anyone shed any light and confirm what is valid? I'm surely missing something obvious

Thanks!

You didn't show it, but you're changing at Milton Keynes:
Not valid on trains timed to depart:
...
  • Milton Keynes Central after 04:29 and before 09:51;(Restrictions do not apply on Fridays)
Milton Keynes has always had this difference, despite the best efforts of Virgin to close it.

It's absolutely fine, so don't worry.

A bit of background info (if you want it; switch off now if you don't!...)

Avanti are not permitted to introduce evening peak restrictions on these regulated fares.

Virgin did actually do this for a period of time, illegally; it was posted on this forum and then removed. I doubt they got into much -if any - trouble though.

Virgin also used to campaign for the abolishment of regulated fares, to enable them to charge higher prices and introduce more onerous time restrictions. Some people within the industry continue to campaign for this but so far they have been unsuccessful.

The ticket is perfectly valid following those itineraries. There is an afternoon peak restriction boarding at Euston or Watford Junction but not at Milton Keynes, which is where you will change on those journeys. However, the ticket you are being offered is routed 'Watford not London' and is more expensive than a ticket routed 'not via London' which will be equally valid on the same itinerary. It is worth looking at an alternative site to make the purchase, in order to get the lower price - it is offered correctly on the LNER site, for example.
