Odd ticket stocks

Inspired by the impending demise of CCST I want to collect as many oddball tickets soon to be swept away by Aztec slop. So far I can think of:

• GatEx red CCSTs
• The red CCSTs you can get from the IoW ferry terminals' ticket machines
• Those weird huge glossy things they sell from the Stansted Express stall at Stansted?
• Irish Rail tickets (I don't know if they can issue tickets for GB-only journeys but they can issue tickets valid for journeys *in* GB so I count them)
• The weird non-rounded rectangle magstripe cards I remember getting in 2022, buying tickets from St P's bank of TfL ticket machines
• Are the airline-style Advances travel agents used to give out still around somewhere?

Any more? Are any I've mentioned dead yet?

When Merseyrail and TfL get dragged into the 21st century and universally accept barcode tickets, which have been in use on the rail network for nearly 20 years (Chiltern were the first franchised TOC to introduce them, way back in 2007.)

Either that, or the Train Companies will withdraw from the cross-London agreement. Travelcards (including Day Travelcards) can be issued on Smartcards, so there's no real reason to retain CCST for those.

We tried to use one but it appeared to have been disabled.

IIRC there are a shedload of "special" CCSTs. For example the "GM county card" which I use has it's own special stock.

There are hundreds and hundreds of differerent CCST stocks including many which are rarely seen or no longer used.

I have put together a list of all the different types of CCST stock that i can think of:

The four most common types are the standard orange CCST stock:

• RSP9299 - These tickets are part of a folded stack and are designed to be manually ripped apart to separate them. This version is used by guards onboard for steatite printers and avantix previously.

• RSP9399 - These tickets are part of a circular roll and the machine cuts them when printing. This version is used mostly by S&B TVMs and Parkeon TVMs.

• RSP9499 - These tickets are part of a fan fold roll and the machine cuts them when printing. This version is used by a few ticket office and a few TVMs but seems to be very rare.

• RSP9599 - These are fully separated tickets with smooth ends without the bits on the ends. This version is used by almost all ticket offices and by Shere TVMs.

There are also the TFL versions of the above tickets that are issued by all London Overground TVMs and London Overground ticket offices:

• RSP9299/TFL - An orange CCST as above but with a TFL logo in the middle of the ticket.

• RSP9399/TFL - An orange CCST as above but with a TFL logo in the middle of the ticket.

• RSP9499/TFL - An orange CCST as above but with a TFL logo in the middle of the ticket.

• RSP9599/TFL - An orange CCST as above but with a TFL logo in the middle of the ticket.

Then you have pink London Underground ticket stock issued by London Underground TVMs:

• Version 1 - A 9399 style (ie with lugs on the end) pink ticket issued by the newer style Cubic TVMs which only exist at some stations. Some machines have this style and some machines have the below style.

• Version 2 - A 9599 style (ie without lugs on the end) pink ticket issued by the newer style Cubic TVMs which only exist at some stations. Some machines have this style and some machines have the above style.

• Version 3 - A sharp corner edge ticket (unlike the 9299/9399/9499/9599 stocks) issued by the older style Cubic TVMs. These are still the most common TVMs at LU stations. This is the new version that says Transport For London on the stock and is now the most common one.

• Version 4 - A sharp corner edge ticket (unlike the 9299/9399/9499/9599 stocks) issued by the older style Cubic TVMs. These are still the most common TVMs at LU stations. This is the old version that says London Underground on the stock and is getting very rare to find now.

• Version 5 - A very similar version to version 4 but with the addition of orange triangles. No longer used.

• Version 6 - A very similar version to version 4 but with the addition of yellow triangles. No longer used.

• Version 7 - A very similar version to version 4 but with the addition of green triangles. No longer used.

• Version 8 - A very similar version to version 4 but with the addition of blue triangles. No longer used.

• Version 9 - A very similar version to version 4 but with the addition of red triangles. No longer used.

There is the Docklands Light Railway ticket stock which has had a couple types:

• Version 1 - The standard current 9599 style version issued by the Shere TVMs. It is pink with a large DLR logo.

• Version 2 - A sharp edge version ticket issued by the old Schlumberger TVMs. It was pink with small DLR logos.

• Version 3 - A sharp edge version ticket issued by the old Schlumberger TVMs. It was pink with a turquoise band and the old DLR logos.

There is the Croydon Tramlink ticket stock which has had a couple types:

• Version 1 - The new style light green tickets from the Schlumberger TVMs.

• Version 2 - The old style dark green tickets from the Schlumberger TVMs.

There is also a whole collection of different Heathrow Express CCST ticket stocks:

• Version 1 - Light Blue Free Transfer Stock - This is a 9399 style stock currently issued by those Parkeon TVMs for free tickets between the terminals.

• Version 2 - Purple New HX Stock - This is a 9399 style stock currently issued by the Parkeon TVMs at Paddington and Heathrow that just sell HX tickets and by some Cubic TVMs at Heathrow that sell LU tickets.

• Version 3 - Purple New HX Stock - This is a 9599 style stock currently issued by some Cubic TVMs at Heathrow that sell LU tickets.

• Version 4 - Purple New HX Stock - This is a 9599 style stock with a slight variation that was issued at the ticket offices prebiously.

• Version 5 - Old Dark Blue HX Stock - This was a 9399 style ticket issued by those newer Parkeon TVMs. This stock has not been used for almost ten years.

• Version 6 - Old Dark Blue HX Stock - This was a 9599 style ticket issued by ticket offices. This stock has not been used for almost ten years.

• Version 7 - Old Dark Blue HX Stock - This was a sharp corner edge ticket issued by those old HX Cubic TVMs that were the same make and model as the older current LU TVMs. This stock has not been used for almost ten years.

• Version 8 - Plain White HX Stock - This was a sharp corner edge ticket issued by those old HX Cubic TVMs that were the same make and model as the older current LU TVMs. This plain white stock was only used in the early years of HX and is now long gone.

There was the red Gatwick Express branded CCST ticket stock:

• RSP7599/403 - This was a red "Gatwick Express" branded CCST but i have not seen this used since before covid.

There was also the old Southern Daysave green CCST ticket stock:

• RSP7599/298 - This was a green "Southern" branded CCST for Daysave tickets but i have not seen this used for over ten years.

• RSP7599/298 - This was a green "South Central" branded version of the above.

• RSP7599/298 - This was a white and yellow "Connex" branded version of the above.

• Version 3 - A 9499 ticket with Red Funnel Ferries branding and colouring.

• Version 4 - A 9599 ticket with Red Funnel Ferries branding and colouring.

Irish Rail have a huge selection of different CCST ticket stocks. They have at least twenty. I have not yet attempted a list of all those.

"Removal of magnetic tickets completed" is listed as a 2029+ milestone in TfL's 2025 Technology Roadmap. They'll stick around for at least 3 more years.

Then you have pink London Underground ticket stock issued by London Underground TVMs

Only the RSP-style stock is issued by their TVMs. The right-angle corner stock is/was issued by their AFMs, MFMs, and the now-extinct FFMs.*

(* [Advanced / Multi / Few] Fare Machines, collectively known as Passenger Operated Machines. In TfL vernacular TVMs within their portfolio are another type of POM)

CCST is still the only ticket format that can be used for any journey. I can see it becoming very rare outside of the South East though.

It is not a CCST but these daysave tickets are on similar thicker card paper and certainly count as an odd ticket stock.

I think it may have been used for a gateline pass for staff or some other similar purpose.

What i do not understand is why some TFL new style Cubic TVMs print 9399/9499 style stock and some TFL new style Cubic TVMs print 9599 style stock. They are the same exact make and model and installed at the same time but yet they have different stock. I have never known this to happen with any other TVM types. I am guessing some have been fitted with Newbury printers (or another similar type) and some have been fitted with Swecoin printers (or another similar type) but the question is why. Bond Street and Tottenham Court Road have identical machines next to each other with different stocks.









5555 is the 9399/9499 style stock.

5561 is the 9599 style stock.

I might make an FOI to TFL for all the TFL ticket stock codes as i can not find a list online.

There must be dozens of rarely seen CCST stocks for special purposes like this.

It's likely there are some machines fitted with a standard Newbury printer that uses pre-cut stock (with the hopper holding 500 to 600 tickets) and some with a rear hopper attached that takes three to view fanfold stock, boosting capacity to 1500 tickets if memory serves.

The newer Shere FAST machines have the same setup, whereas the original machines had two separate Newburys and a receipt roll printer. (The latter was removed in later designs, though the new Worldline Kiosks have a roll printer and a single Newbury.)
