It sounds like one of the "short" HST sets that have transferred to ScotRail (colloquially dubbed the HSTGTi sets). They have been transferred from GWR and remain as a 4+2 formation, if memory serves correct.

They have been testing for a few months now - could this be like a preview service as it seems to be passenger carrying as you mention

Crew training for Scotrail for the introduction of HSTs, these are all ex-GWR and are undergoing refurbishment and relivery work prior to introduction but are being used for training in the interim

I've seen two of these around the bits of Scotland that I frequent recently - a 5+2 with custom "A new railway for Scotland" or some such branding, against the GWR base blue, which has been around Aberdeen for a few weeks - and a 4+2 in unaltered GWR livery (the one with the waveforms - is that old?) that's been in Haymarket the last few times I've been through.

"HSTGTi" is a program to replace Sprinters with 4+2 sets that remain with GWR.

I thought it was more of an an enthusiast nickname for the GWR short HST 'programme'. Cannot really see why the same nickname doesn't work anywhere...

When I saw it in Haymarket yesterday, (I’m assuming there’s only one short FGW-branded HST running around), it had paper notices in all the windows saying it wasn’t in passenger service.

Semi-relatedly, the Turbostar I was travelling on had a couple of guys from Northern being shown how the door panels etc. work.
