Hi,

I have compiled a list of international passenger trains that run into/from Ukraine.
Not all trains are daily. Some trains are running combined over segments. I have tried to consult both the PKP, UZ, DB, MAV, and ZSSK reservation systems. Inconsistencies exist, so I do not claim that the timetable information is 100% correct.

The border crossing of Zahony/Chop(Gr) between Hungary and Ukraine has the most passenger trains.

Just to point out that Kyiv is now the accepted Westernised spelling of Ukraine's capital. Kiev is derived from the Russian version and is, understandably, not liked or used by Ukraine.

Very interesting seeing this all in one list.

I presume that - aside from the Bucharest-Chișinău service - this includes all the remaining trains in Europe which change between standard and Russian gauge.

MOLDOVA:

Valcinet(Gr) - up to 1 daily roundtrip:

md->ua:
D351 Kishinev (17:05) - Valcinet (03:34) - Mohilyv (05:17) - Kiev (12:18)

ua->md:
D351 Kiev (17:05) - Mohilyv (01:22) - Valcinet (02:25) - Chisinau (11:53)

This service is shown as running on alternate days in the European Railway Timetable and on timetables in Chișinău station.
(Combined with the train to Bucharest on the outbound but not inbound service).

And is it correct that there's a Bratislava to Uzghorod train but the return is only from Mukachevo?

Indeed, and likewise it's more correctly Uzhhorod (Ukrainian) or Uzhgorod (Russian) but not Uzghorod. Pedantic maybe, but it looks better in Cyrillic! (Ужгород)

Thanks for the summary. Shame there is nothing to/from Romania directly except via Moldova.

Which ones are loco-hauled and which ones are carts?

You also appear to be missing the RGJ from Prague.

It has been made official this Morning.
A new night train D99/D100 from the Ukrainian Capital to Bucharest will be introduced from October 10, 2025.
This train will run via Ungheni, Moldova - so not via the direct border crossing Ukraine/Romania Vadul Siret.

It's ok to call it Kyiv :D

Looking at the timings it seems that this will run between Bucharest and Ungheni as part of the Bucharest<>Chisinau train (as seen on many Youtube vidoes not to mention featuring in a Eurovision song).

But this must mean that it runs separately from the alternate days Chisinau<>Kyiv service.

Since outbound from Chisinau (but not vice versa) the Chisinau to Kyiv and Bucharest trains are combined as far as Ungheni (according to Vagonweb and the timings though I haven't seen it personally) this presumably means that trains will leave Chisinau with a section to Bucherest and another to Kyiv, and at Ungheni will swap the Chisinau>Kyiv portion for a Kyiv>Bucharest one.

What I am seeing right now: it appears that the new train to Bucharest operates daily. The timings for segment from Ungheni to the Ukrainian Capital is much different than for the existing Chisinau train to the Ukrainian Capital.

I don't know, how Moldovan authorities treat this train. It could be that the train is sealed on the territory of Moldova, so that Moldovan entry and exit checks won't take place. That means that this train cannot be used for travel to/from Moldova. Let's wait for the first trip reports.

Perhaps due to constraints at the Romanian end of things. This way means that CFR don't have to operate another (slightly) cross-border train so I can imagine that it is by far the easiest option.

I was wondering about that.

I could quite imagine wanting to keep the full capacity for passengers travelling to/from Ukraine anyway.

I noticed the train composition has just been posted on Vagonweb.cz (https://www.vagonweb.cz/razeni/vlak.php?zeme=CFR&kategorie=IRN&cislo=УЗ:100К|CFR:100&nazev=&rok=2025), and that suggests that the Ukrainian part will actually be detached at Iasi and cross into Ukraine via Vadul-Siret, so not running through Moldova at all.

Interesting. If that's the case it's far less obvious (to me) that they would share with the Chișinău service for the Romanian leg.

Yes, thank you for providing the link to Wagonweb.
I think the new Bucharest train will run over Moldovan territory.
In order to avoid Moldova the train must pass through Chernovtsy and Khmelnytskyi - two major cities with a big Romanian diaspora.
Why isn't the train stopping there ?

The same is true with Suceava and Pascani on the Romanian side.

Moreover, the Iasi is quite a detour between Bucharest and Vadul Siret.

I think Vagonweb doesn't always show all intermediate stops, so perhaps it will stop there? Is there any official timetable information yet from CFR or UZ?

UZ has published official timetable information - but it doesn't say anything what happens between Nicolina (Romania) and Zhmerinka (Ukraine).

Wouldn't a call at Nicolina rather suggest a route via Ungheni?

The Bucharest-Kyiv train will use Soviet loading gauge carriages, like the Bucharest-Chișinău train. Perhaps the Bucharest-Ungheni route is the only one in Romania where they are cleared to run.

The BULGARIA EXPRESS ran from Sofia to Moscow via Ukraine (Vadul Siret -> Konotop) until the end of 2014 with Soviet loading gauge carriages.
And in 2019 we saw a Minsk-Varna night train with Belarusian Soviet loading gauge carriages on that route via Vadul Siret, as well.

This route presumably means the only change to CFR operations is a longer train to/from Ungheni, and a few more coaches to find a place for during the day.

As opposed to new paths and a new border operation.

Also I don't know if the guage station it would need to use to travel direct is in use but if so it must only be for freight, as opposed to Ungheni which is already handling passenger trains and indeed the Kyiv coaches can be handled alongside the Chișinău ones.

And if Vagonweb is (now) correct that's 5 locomotives for the full journey (not counting shunters at Ungheni)

Video of the inaugural Kyiv-Bucharest train passing through Moldova on October 10th.

Passenger train Kyiv - Bucharest, Mogyliv-Podilsky (UA) - Valcinet (MD) stretch, Moldova

The Vagonweb entry has now been updated with the "real composition" observed at Kyiv-Pasazhirskiy. Note that the train only has four carriages instead of the scheduled six.

Thanks for that. My attempts to find a video on Youtube failed.

The real composition, with no "1st class" (2 person compartment) coach agrees with one of the announcements I read (and I now forget where) that it would only carry 4 person compartment coaches.

Also interesting that it's not hauled by one of their TE33ACs like the Moldovan part of the Chișinău to Bucharest train.

According to Vagonweb the train is scheduled to be hauled by a Ukrzalіznitsya locomotive as far as Vălcineț, and the video is from that section. The only difference is that it is a 2TE116 instead of a 2M62. Vagonweb lists a TE33AC for Vălcineț to Ungheni.

Ah yes. I just saw the "passing through Moldova" bit.

It would be quite interesting to know if a Moldovan exit immigration check is taking place in Vălcinet, Moldova. If yes, that means it is - practically speaking - possible to take the train only between Bucharest and Moldova (Vălcinet).

CFR has published the full timetable for the new night train D99/100. The data include the stops in Ungheni and Valcinet in Moldova.

I seen Ukrainian YB soviet carriages at Budapest Keleti few weeks back, not sure what service that is.
