Yes and no.
You can get a basic check done on yourself via Disclosure Scotland (regardless of where in the UK you live) for a fee. This lists unspent criminal convictions.
A more in-depth check (Standard or Enhanced, and checks on the barred registers) can only be carried out by an employer or equivalent[1] when a regulated position is being applied for.
[1] This might include via a local Council (or whoever regulates it) for things like babysitters - if that's the case I suggest enquiring locally.

Not clear what you mean - I guess you are getting an advertisement on here relevant to the thread?
Yes. However it is only a basic check which includes only non-spent criminal convictions, and does not include other intelligence, certain spent convictions etc, as the other levels of the check may do. So if you are applying for a role requiring a check by law, it won't be suitable.
So whether it's useful to you depends on what your need for it is!

No, only an employer (or relevant agency) can do this. It has the same access restriction as a new one.

One (longwinded) way of getting hold of one may be to sign up with an employment agency that covers roles requiring a DBS disclosure: e.g. teaching assistant, school cleaner. Another would be to volunteer with a group working with vulnerable individuals. (They can get the DBS check done for free, an employment agency may charge you.)
Once you've gotten one, and the form is posted to your house, sign up for the DBS update service, (£13 p.a.) and you can then give that reference number to anyone you want to allow access to your DBS record.

I'm sorry to say that there is a lot of innacurate and downright false information in some of the 'advice' in this thread.
As it happens, I keep a stock of the application forms and checklists in my office which I hand out to clients when required. The distribution of the application forms for a search is quite independant of the agencies who may vet the applications.
In addition to 'employers', there are charities and, crucially, "umbrella organisations" who are accredited to process applications for searches. They are listed here :- https://dbs-ub-directory.homeoffice.gov.uk/. An "unbrella organisation" can process applications for searches on behalf of organisations, people and groups in their sphere of activity.
There is a small fee for the search, and a small cost to processing the applications.
Searches can be requested for several purposes, and as a consequence, entailing different levels of disclosure.

The list of acceptable documents specifies it must be a current and valid passport.
When applying for a DBS certificate for a university course (using a driving license as a group 1 document) I did list the number of my expired passport on the form, as I recall it asked for details of any passport held. You'd still want to have another group 1 document to provide, however, or you'd be looking at the one of the longwinded alternative routes exemplified in these lovely scenarios.

That is useful information, thank you. I wasn't aware that umbrella organisations would offer their services to individuals as well.
For other readers: remember that many employment agencies will expect the applicant to cover the cost of their search fee, typically reimbursing after a set period of employment through them.

No. The information you are looking for is in the links above.
If you can provide a 'group 1 document' (such as driving licence with photograph or birth certificate), then you still must also provide 2 further documents from group 1, 2a or 2b (and at least one of these must verify your current address).
I have:
Driving license (provisional/photo card out of date) - 4b dated 2010. photocard was supposed to be renewed but never got it done!
small birth certificate issued at time of birth, and quarterly bank statement dated 31oct14 -30jan2015.

And
A credit card statement AND bank statement ( 2 documents from group 2b).
Would that be enough!

Original birth certificate from Group 1. Check.
Two other documents:
Credit card or bank statement (Assuming they're less than three months old)
P45 (less than 12 months old)
And both of them confirm your address (you only need one). Check.
