An obsolete piece of equipment, usually a wheeled railway wagon or similar, that has been abandoned in a siding on a long term basis.

Especially in the case of such equipment becoming obscured from view, for part of the year, due to excessive summer foliage.

Etymology: name derived from several such wagons abandoned near the township of Burnden, Greater Manchester.

Yeah, right. I know what you mean, having often passed Burnden, but what is special about it?

Abandoned wagons have been found in old mines dating back to the very dawn of 'railways'. There have also long been classics elsewhere on the main line network. Helsby and Shenfield are two that I have passed recently.

Sadly quite a few heritage lines seem to have their own share of such relics, often termed 'linear scrapyards' by unsympathetic viewers.

I'm not familiar with that particular location, but to my mind nowhere comes close to Carnforth for a miserable rotting collection of knackered rolling stock. Maybe those sidings to the south of Crewe station, but I think Carnforth is still the winner.

Would anyone like to suggest anywhere more desperate than Carnforth and I'll keep a lookout the next time I pass?

Carnforth is nothing but an unlicensed scrap yard and the sooner the junk there is disposed of, the better. Virtually none of those "preserved" wrecks are ever going to move again. They're just sitting there acting as a home for vermin

It must be a few years ago on the website, when I opened a new thread about abandoned waggons on the rail network, commencing with the very same two ballast hopper waggons at Burnden, that ended up with over 100 postings made upon it.

It would be good if someone on the forum staff could add this thread to it, as there were some postings with images, which would be of interest.

It is longer than I thought as I have now found the thread concerned on the Traction and Rolling Stock forum and it has been locked for some time now.

It was called "Two abandoned hopper waggons" and I opened the thread on 30th April 2011.

Hellifield has quite a sizeable collection. Not as big as Carnforth, but a decent second place possibly.
