I don't mean replacing guards but on routes where there is currently no second member of staff on board.
Despite alarmist predictions OBS are still on Southern services and Merseyrail 777 dispute seems to have been resolved on the basis that by limiting the second persons platform role they will have more time to check tickets and clamp down on rampant Merseyrail fare evasion thus largely paying for themselves. This does raise the question of whether there are DOO routes where OBS would collect sufficient additional revenue to pay for themselves? Alternatively, that they collect sufficient additional revenue that combined with the added customer satisfaction they would be a worthwhile investment. The two services that spring to mind are Great Northern and Thameslink (at least outside of Oystercard zone).
Does RMT recognise OBS as its own role or treat them as guards?
With the current dispute coming back to DOO the government could win more public support for introducing OBS on DOO routes. DOO and DCO are the same thing for drivers but not for passengers. If the finances add up OBS would be a welcome addition for many passengers.
